A well known YC company in Canada keeps bragging about innovation and calling itself the Figma of something, offers $60K CAD for a sales role. This is why grads are done with these so called forward thinking tech companies. You cannot squeeze young talent, overwork people, pay like it is 2015, and still expect everyone to clap because you call it startup culture and file SR&ED.

@fordnation Affordable housing and healthcare which are badly underfunded and neglected in this province would probably help with this issue. But hey, just throwing everyone in jail is easier than actually working to solve these problems, isn't it?

Ontario transit riders have had enough of dangerous, illegal and open drug use on our subways, buses and streetcars. We’re bringing in tough new rules to crack down on people using drugs on public transit so we can keep our communities safe.

gas prices in Ottawa when Carney took excise tax off: $1.65/L gas prices in Ottawa today: $1.87/L price caps work. multibillion dollar handouts to petroleum giants do not.

I’m seeing so many assessments like this on the AI “fool’s gold rush,” including from economists. But since hedge fund and PE managers have completely divorced foundational economic principles from valuations/ stock prices, I just don’t know if reality matters anymore. It seems the super rich (& their money people) have successfully horded all resources, and they can continue to reward themselves without measure or account.
Gary Marcus@GaryMarcus

Sheer insanity. Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and Meta collectively are spending more money than the Manhattan Project *every single month*. More than 12x the Manhattan Project every year. And what they have got to show for it? None are making major profits on AI; none has a technical moat; a massive price war is inevitable. And few of their customers are seeing major returns on investment. Greatest capital misallocation in history.

@jbsteinberg Why do streetcars even exist. Retarded for having public transport that can’t pull over and stalls two lanes of traffic every time a passenger wants off.

The RapidTO lanes exemplify the zero-sum mindset that has infected urban policymakers in North America. This example is especially egregious because there's so much obvious low-hanging fruit that would get everyone---cars, buses, streetcars & bikes---moving faster and more safely. Here are some easy, quick, and cheap steps that would reduce congestion for everyone: 1. Eliminate ~30% of streetcar & bus stops. No less than 500m between stops. Why the hell do we need stops at Bathurst & Harbord AND Bathurst & Ulster? It's crazy. 2. Eliminate left turns from all arterials (not just select ones) between 7am-7pm. College, Bathurst, Dundas, Queen---all of them. 3. Dedicated right-turn signals for cars (pedestrians can't cross) at all intersections on arterial streets. 4. Longer left turn signals. It's ridiculous that only 3-4 cars get through on major intersections. There are often 10+ cars waiting to turn left from Spadina onto Queen. 5. Eliminate push-to-illuminate-crosswalk buttons on arterial streets. Relegate them to minor streets only. Pedestrians can cross at traffic lights on major streets. 6. Streetcars don't open doors on green lights. They let traffic move and wait until lights turn red to let passengers on & off. Longer term, I'd make more arterial streets one-way like Adelaide and Richmond. Ideally, only University, Spadina, Jarvis, and Lakeshore should have two-way traffic. This is more expensive, of course. But it would do wonders.
IntegrityTO@integrity_to

Toronto drivers seem to have had enough of the constant single-file idling on Bathurst and are now driving as they please. Do you agree with this act of civil rebellion? 🤔

Everyone will be forced to pick a side. Some will drag their feet. Some will be crushed first. Some will be regime changed by the CIA. Some will be bribed via regime-change-as-a-service. Some will do so due to a shortage of energy or dollar liquidity. But everyone will pick a side. Everyone. No exceptions. If it means we never interact with an Indian or French or Swiss person ever again because they value strategic neutrality then so be it. Thats the same as just picking China outright. Complete decoupling.

It's wild to me that many people who make more than $200,000 a year think they are not in the upper class in Canada. That puts you in the top 2-5% of Canadian income earners. If that isn't the upper class, then there is no upper class in Canada.

Hot take but SpaceX is probably the best civil engineering company in the world. Somehow they are able to make these insanely complex ground system and building designs and find the perfect contractors and technicians to build out their ideas in months or 1-2 years. I feel like we need the SpaceX methodology and their contractors across many projects. If we did we could probably have gotten so much done and in a much higher quality. They say you can’t have fast, cheap, and good, but somehow SpaceX always manages to deliver on all 3.
