The stakes today for Starmer are not about if he knew. It's clear he did not. But it is more about whether he can convince MPs he would not have appointed Mandelson if he knew he failed the vetting. He was prepared to overlook issues already flagged by the Cabinet Office.

MUST WATCH: Olly Robbins confirms that Starmer personally chose Mandelson and that the FCDO was told to make it happen. Security officials said he shouldn’t get clearance. They were overruled. Starmer then told the public Mandelson had “clearance for the role.” He must he take responsibility and resign.

It isn’t remotely credible to believe that neither Starmer nor any Minister knew Mandelson had failed the vetting process. Knowing civil servants as I do, they are extremely cautious, conscientious individuals who would have rushed to the Minister to tell them & certainly would have told the Minister to correct the record. The idea that not one civil servant told one government Minister is frankly preposterous and Starmer is taking the public for fools.
