My dear front-end developers (and anyone who’s interested in the future of interfaces): I have crawled through depths of hell to bring you, for the foreseeable years, one of the more important foundational pieces of UI engineering (if not in implementation then certainly at least in concept): Fast, accurate and comprehensive userland text measurement algorithm in pure TypeScript, usable for laying out entire web pages without CSS, bypassing DOM measurements and reflow

I’ve been designing in tech for 15 years. Somewhere along the way the work stopped resonating. So I wiped the slate clean. Deleted my entire portfolio. Started from zero. Rebuilt everything with intention. My brand. My style. The clients I attract. All from the ground up. All aligned with what I actually believe in. One shift changed everything. I aligned my values with my craft. It is never too late to recalibrate and reengage.

today’s experiment: chimera. a little tool that let’s you realtime morph through a design system matrix generated by 4 reference images. this one was inspired by listening to @jameygannon talk about her process on Dive Club with @ridd_design and How I AI with @clairevo. her approach to choosing moodboards over prompts made me wonder what might be possible if we applied that same approach to generative UI. and after a few dead ends, the idea turned into chimera. the results are very generic at the moment but I might tune it up if people seem interested. the big reminder for me is how much more inspiring a tool feels when you can explore in realtime instead of waiting for results every time you make a change. lots more things to try in that direction.

`tabular-nums` should be the default for any number that updates ( timers, counters, prices, percentages, scores, live data etc ). you can enable this tnum OpenType feature using the CSS property `font-variant-numeric`. .tabular-nums { font-variant-numeric: tabular-nums; }

White text on dark backgrounds looks heavier than it actually is. Light bleeds past the edges of each letter, making the font appear bolder than it is. Road sign designers figured this out decades ago. Fonts like Wayfinding Sans Pro built for highway signage ship two versions of every weight. The one meant for light-on-dark is thinner, so both look equal to a driver at speed. Same idea works on the web. Make your light mode font-weight slightly heavier than your dark mode. Both will feel the same, even though they aren't. The kind of detail no one notices when it's right. Everyone feels when it's wrong.

If you’re a frontend dev or designer, I highly recommend getting familiar with the “oklch” (lightness, chroma, hue) color model. It seems to be way better for design systems than rgb or hsl And all modern browsers support it already oklch.fyi
