@SolidEvidence @maitlis That’s an over-simplification. Many MRI scanners are now sealed units with minimal helium. Of our Trust’s scanners: three are blue seal units. Only the 12 year old 1.5T (which is overdue replacement) and the new 3T require helium top-ups./1

I hope no one needs an MRI this year. The world's largest producer of liquified helium is in Qatar and is shut off. We just got a notice that our supply for the year will be at least cut in half. No one could have predicted this (unless they thought about it).

Unless Hatzola triage in a similar manner, this could be a way of getting their patients up the queue. Your use of center (not centre) suggests your UK H/C experience is not UK based.

Hatzola was established in 1979 by members of the Orthodox Jewish community in North London. It is a volunteer, non-profit organisation providing rapid pre-hospital emergency medical care and ambulance response free of charge to the community, serving both Jewish and non-Jewish patients alike. In 2026 four of its ambulances are burned down in Golders Green. I can’t think of a more tragic illustration of the destructive nature of antisemitism, which harms both the Jewish community and wider society at large. Hatzola is of benefit to everyone: a shining example of the contribution Jewish communities endeavour make to their respective diaspora societies. The arsonists responsible for this heinous act do not share the same desire to contribute to Britain; their only intent is to destroy. Any society that adopts a passive attitude towards such antisemitic criminals is, in equal measure, betraying its loyal Jewish citizens and acting in a manner of profound self-harm.

If the jewish ambulance service Hatzola is available for everyone, how come I just spent 10 minutes searching for an emergency number and none seem to be online? They claim to reach emergencies in 2–5 minutes.

@snowleopardess Ambulance crews are only allowed to spend a certain amount of time with a patient in hospital, then they have to leave them. Crews that wait for longer can be penalised. All in the names of getting ambulances back on the road quicker. But now we have spare ambulance to lend out?
