@realRichHunting @SenSanders China has repeatedly signalled openness to international cooperation on frontier AI. The leaders of the CCP greatly care about regime stability, and just like everybody else, they don't want to be overthrown by their own machines.

@aideathflame @SenSanders Superintelligence does not become safe just because you devote your mental energy to framing the CCP as the relevant enemy. Btw China was the only country to propose a pause at the first UN meeting on AI in 2023. The Chinese also don't want to be overthrown by their own machines.

@LetUsDeAge @SenSanders By believing in this notion, you only serve the CCP. China will not slow down its progress; they have set a goal to achieve AGI/ASI before the West does.

@penadev @SenSanders Nukes are bad when used, but they don't go off the rails themselves. Artificial superintelligence (under current circumstances) poses an existential threat even without any bad actor.

@robdubparker @SenSanders An international ban on superintelligence can be enforced through compute governance. The global AI chip supply chain relies on a single company in the Netherlands, which in turn relies on a single company in Germany. AI data centres consume as much electricity as a small city.

@SenSanders Sounds nice on paper, but this is unrealistic, unfortunately. It would involve complete trust that all countries are following these rules. Bad actors are inevitable. Not sure we can backtrack out of this at this point.

@BenPielstick @SenSanders Sorry to say, but your comment on point 3 shows that you have no idea how modern AI works or what is meant by superintelligence. This is not about tools, it is about creating a new species vastly smarter than us, and nobody knows how to control or align it with human values.

@SenSanders 1. Share information - Good 2. Make AI safe - Good 3. Ban superintelligence - What kind of an utter nonsense idea is this? This is like banning computers for being able to do math faster than humans. We need to accept that technology is going to keep improving, not try to ban it.

@SenSanders A treaty to ban superintelligence asks every nation to trust their rivals have actually stopped, when the cost of being wrong is total.

@Porterhous90889 @SenSanders Much more likely the AI owns us (humanity) or kills everyone. Read the bestseller 'If Anyone Builds It, Everyone Dies' to understand why.

@pvllss Sure it's better than releasing it. But the issue is that it exists at all. They should be deleting all copies of the weights and convening a meeting of global leaders if they are serious about global security.

It’s not just massive job loss and the invasion of our privacy we should worry about. Leading scientists warn AI could pose an existential threat to humanity. That’s why I’m hosting a panel with experts from the U.S. and China on how we control AI and prevent a global tragedy.

@CuttyQ10 @BernieSanders How about trying to understand what he's saying before making a fool of yourself? This is all about global treaties and mutual verification. Smarter-than-human AI is an existential threat, no matter if it's built by the US, China, your grandma, me or anyone else.

@TheJosephLevi @_DNA_GoldenBoy @SenSanders I'd prefer having to speak Chinese over human extinction, but that's beside the point. What we need is an international prohibition (similar to the Montreal Protocol) enforced through a mutual monitoring and verification regime.

@TheJosephLevi @_DNA_GoldenBoy @SenSanders Superintelligence is not a weapon to be aimed at adversaries, but a hazard that strikes the deploying nation first. You don't "have" an AI that is vastly smarter than you (chimpanzees don't "have" humans). Rather, the AI has you. What part of that is so hard to understand?
