Private prisons should not be a part of our country’s carceral system. As governor, I will never support the construction of one in our state. That includes ICE detention centers, like the one CoreCivic is attempting to build in Leavenworth. This center is not welcome in Kansas and should not be given permission to be built. Kansans across our state have made clear we do not want this facility and the Leavenworth City Commission should stand with Kansans tonight by voting no on the permit.
