If you're considering AKs, here's what you need to know:
1st time buyers: stick to PSA or Arsenal. Anything century arms international touches is liable to explode so just... dont. Polish AKs are usually solid, but some importer/builders for em are ass, so its a dice roll.
If you like ak for range toy, great, your first purchase will do just fine. If you like ak for worky work, then you need to look at either customizing an Arsenal yourself, or dip into the Semi-Custom market. Meridian does good work.
If you are a true ak enthusiast, look into rifle dynamics or fuller phoenix. Consider learning to build ak.
Do not try to modernize or fix AK, embrace its flaws. Otherwise you just end up in the same trap as me: spending years developing custom parts for what is basically just an overly expensive AR18/Galil hybrid. Just buy an AR-18 of some derivative or another, at that point.
Notes on caliber: 7.62x39 and 5.45x39 were both obsolete decades ago. They have crap BC, dont expand properly, and are inconsistent as fuck. Their only merits were they were cheap. They are not cheap any more so don't bother.
If you want 7.62 but better in every way, get one in .300 Blackout. If you want 5.45 but better in every way, get it in 5.56. If you want the .30 cal vibes or, even better, .30 cal reach with better performance than either .300 BO or 5.56, or want a short working gun for vehicles, then get a 12.5" 6.5Grendel.
