Portland Maine Rent Control Board has decided to FINE the Landlord $8700 for "retaliation" against tenant.
What was the retaliation? Landlord decided to not renew their lease BECAUSE the Rent Control Board was forcing them to lower the rent.
So the Landlord decided to not renew the lease & move themself into the house.
This was deemed retaliation. This makes no sense. So not wanting to renew a lease cause the tenant doesn't want to pay more - you have to pay the City $8,700.

As a renter I am totally aware of the power dynamic between landlords/tenants & appreciate advocacy that keeps this in check.
What I don't understand is the hatred the Greens have of all landlords. Their opposition to measures that encourage more rental supply on the grounds that landlords will make money off it is so confusing. Those of us who rent do so because we can't afford to buy (mostly) so we need landlords to supply rentals. Do they think the Govt should own all housing and give it to people?

Charter schools are an ideological experiment that isn’t supported by evidence. Labour has abolished the charter school model before and we will do it again. As we did last time, we will consider what happens to any existing charter schools on a case by case basis.
