Instead of simply cancelling student debt, maybe it would be a good idea to loosen the rules about discharging it via bankruptcy. Then you'd both help the people in the greatest need, and start to fix the system (because lenders would have to become less indiscriminate).

@pookleblinky Investors like buying student debt because there is a belief that you can never get rid of it - that isn't true. There are examples where private student lenders end up settling for pennies on the dollar because they know the debt is not going to be paid back.

@Alan_K_Williams Hi @Alan_K_Williams - they aren't automatically discharged as part of a bankruptcy but by filing an adversary proceeding certain borrowers are able to get their student debt discharged in bankruptcy (private and federal). If you have specific questions please let us know.
