We report the first physiological benefit of ascorbate/vitamin C deficiency: protection from a major human parasite which needs it for development. We propose that this can explain why ascorbate became a vitamin (its synthesis was lost) in humans and many other animals.

Gene therapy is transforming how we treat genetic disorders, but what if mutations in more than 30 genes can cause similar symptoms? Now published in @CellStemCell (cell.com/cell-stem-cell…), we report the development of a universal gene therapy for Diamond Blackfan anemia. 1/n

Congrats Stefano on a very unexpected result: elimination of ascorbate from multipotent hematopoietic progenitors is sufficient to confer long-term reconstituting potential in irradiated mice. Ascorbate suppresses leukemia partly by negatively regulating self-renewal potential.

ONLINE NOW, New research from @StefanoComazze1 & @SJMorrison_ out in @BloodJournal: Ascorbate (vitamin C) deficiency increases quiescence and self-renewal in hematopoietic #stemcells and multipotent progenitors. Read it ⬇️ ashpublications.org/blood/article/… #relentlessdiscovery
