South Africa remains open to continued diplomatic engagement and constructive dialogue with any State on matters of mutual concern, hence South Africa finds Ghana’s decision to escalate concerns about irregular migration to the African Union regrettable. However, should the AU deem it appropriate to place the on the Agenda, South Africa will also propose an agenda item on the push and pull factors of migration, including good governance, rule of law, and democracy, in accordance with the Constitutive Act of the AU. South Africa will continue to lead with a Pan-African heart. Our commitment is to solidarity, the rule of law, and the safety of all who reside within our borders. Migration must be managed through cooperation, compassion and continental responsibility.

South Africa’s response to the request by the Republic of Ghana for a debate at the AU on the “Xenophobic Attacks in the Republic of South Africa against African Nationals” The Government of the Republic of South Africa has noted the request by the Republic of Ghana for a debate at the upcoming African Union (AU) Mid-Year Coordination Summit scheduled to take place in Cairo, Arab Republic of Egypt, on the 24th of June 2026 on what it calls “Xenophobic Attacks in the Republic of South Africa against African Nationals”. Following sporadic incidents of confrontation against some immigrants, among them citizens of fellow African states residing in South Africa by sections in our communities earlier this month, the South African government moved swiftly to condemn acts of confrontation and intimidation and directed all law enforcement agencies to promptly take the necessary actions within the laws of the Republic to guarantee the safety of citizens, residents and visitors and to bring to book all perpetrators whose actions are inconsistent with the rule of law and fundamental values of our Constitution.

Thank you for the telephone conversation this morning. We look forward to receiving information on the alleged extra-judicial killings. To date, there has been no credible information availed. We are a nation of the rule of law, and we will continue to ensure all people within our country feel free and safe. We maintain that while Nigeria has a sovereign right to make a decision with regard to the repatriation of its willing citizens, we remain of the view that calls for repatriations will not be able to address the full scale of irregular migration. We also believe that engagements on migration should be evidence-based, deal with push and pull factors, and avoid fearmongering. The South African government continues to condemn attacks on foreign nationals, and it maintains that law enforcement must decisively deal with any violence against foreign nationals in South Africa. We look forward to ensuring that this matter is handled in a manner that maintains our enduring bilateral relations.
Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu@Ojukwu_Bianca

This morning, I had a phone conversation with Hon Ronald Lamola, South Africa Foreign Affairs Minister who expressed concern and misgivings concerning the plans by the government of Nigeria to evacuate its citizens desirous of leaving the Republic of South Africa due to the recent xenophobic attacks and anti-foreigner sentiments openly expressed during continuing anti-migrant protests in South Africa, the latest of which took place in Durban, South Africa, yesterday 6th May 2026. I maintained that our Government cannot stand by and watch the systematic harrasment and humiliation of our nationals resident in SA as well as the extra-judicial killings of our people, and that the evacuation of our citizens who want to return home remains our Government's priority at this time . I also highlighted the need for their police and justice systems to take the cases on ground of extra-judicial killings of Nigerians in South Africa more seriously and that there should be clear and immediate consequences for such acts. Yesterday's protests in Durban did not record acts of violence as there was heavy security presence. However Nigerians were advised to close their shops and businesses and stay largely indoors by Mission. Our discussions also centered on the violent and indiscriminate rhetoric and actions of South Africa's anti-foreigner political parties which puts the lives and properties of Nigerian and other Nationals at risk, but which conversely might also have the effect jeopardizing the safety of South African interests in Nigeria. Nigerians have exercised, and continue to demonstrate commendable restraint, in their response to the ongoing crisis. I also brought to his attention, having engaged with some of our Nationals resident with their families in South Africa, the unfortunate fact that Nigerian Children as well as children born of both Nigerian and South African parents (referred to as 'Sougerians' ) are being wrongfully bullied in schools and taunted to 'return to their country'. This is reprehensible and capable of causing trauma to young minds for whom such incidents may remain etched in memory. Hon. Lamola informed that the SA authorities recognise that they have a responsibility to protect these innocent children and doing their utmost through education supervisory bodies to discourage these practices. While we both pledged to continue to work together to de-escalate this crisis, noting the vehement condemnations of the President of South Africa, President Cyril Ramaphosa and SA Government of the prevailing state of affairs, what is worrisome to our citizens both in Nigeria and those resident in South Africa is that the demand that all foreigners leave South Africa, appears to be targeted only towards black Africans which makes one wonder whether what is happening should not be more accurately defined as 'Afriphobia' rather than Xenophobia. The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed that the Nigerian Missions in South Africa set up , with immediate effect, a crisis notifications unit for imperiled citizens who have also been advised first and foremost to contact SA security authorities whenever dangerous situations arise.

So after decades of “anti-colonial” rhetoric, Zimbabwe is returning European-owned farms to secure debt relief from Western lenders. This is what happens when economic collapse leaves a country with no leverage. Sovereignty starts being negotiated through debt restructuring meetings.

Zimbabwe will return 67 farms seized from foreigners from four European countries covered by bilateral investment pacts, the country's agriculture minister said, as it seeks to mend ties with Western countries while it battles for debt relief. reuters.com/sustainability…

The challenge of international migration is a global phenomenon. We welcome the opportunity to discuss the Push & Pull factors behind it. What drives migrants away from their homes? In discussing possible solutions...what is the role of countries where migrants come from (Sending countries), role of countries that provide a safe passage (Transit countries) & how do we assist receiving countries like South Africa in managing the challenges & impact of dealing with undocumented individuals given the glaring complexities.

You cannot campaign for “open borders” in one country when 53 other African states don’t allow it. If open borders are to be implemented, it should be done through the African Union, with all member states on board. Doing it unilaterally in Pretoria id just to burden SAns.
