Excited to see this @NIDAnews supported work led by @klbrida officially published! Kasey identified a marker of neurons that are responsive to the psychostimulant drug cocaine, and discovered that this marker is essential for cocaine reward. science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…

We described a neural mechanism for motion-induced hypothermia which can also be targeted to treat obesity. Congratulations to ⁦@longlong_tu⁩ who started this scientific journey trying to understand his own miserable suffering from motion sickness. nature.com/articles/s4225…

A highly accomplished senior colleague of mine proposed the following strategy for reviewing @NIH R01s and truly believes it would result in the same if not better quality of #science being funded. I don't disagree. 1. Give everyone on study section abstracts only to each grant with investigator names. 2. 1st round is 👍 or 👎 only vote to decide who makes the cut for round 2 to based on a threshold. 3. Second round is just a lottery until you fill the number of fundable grants out of a bingo cage. This would save enormous amounts of time and $ which could also be used to fund more grants. It would also eliminate some (not all of course) of the issues noted below. I think we #scientists overvalue how much we can evaluate the science by combing through pages and pages of a grant. The time and sweat tax of reviewing grants is not trivial.

Our latest work in @NatureBiotech describing a new molecule with potential for non-opioid pain relief. We developed a prodrug that releases monomethyl fumarate at sites of oxidative stress, relieving pain in models of neuropathy and osteoarthritis nature.com/articles/s4158…

Posted a while back about renovations to the lab. Now the infrastructure is all in place for the physiology lab (wet bench side still to come). We have hardline piping, switching manifolds, Cat6 ethernet, and isolated circuits. Planning for something unconventional...

Got home from the @UAB_CNC retreat to find I had missed this promotion letter in my inbox over the past few days. Fitting for the "serious" lab retreat photo we took this year. Sincere thanks to the awesome scientists in the lab as well as many mentors that made this possible!
