In about 1997, one of Lisa Scottoline's books referenced a Philadelphia female attorney who "played co-ed rugby.". At that time, I was (1) the ONLY female rugby player in Philadelphia and (2) there has never been actual "coed rugby".

SNL's Colin Jost on Iran: "This attack might be a bad idea, I don't know. I'm not really an expert on Iran. So let's hear from someone who can explain why we might have done it."

@TheStroBro @BlakeSNeff I remember taking the Dartmouth swim test in the Fall of 1988; the pool was visible to many passing through Memorial Gym so I went at a low activity time because I was horrified by the thought of others seeing me in a swimsuit.

@BlakeSNeff Never would have thought swim testing was maintstream. Of course at VMI we had to take Swimming (Rat Drowning), Rat Boxing, and Wrestling.

Granted, a swim test is kind of orthogonal to anything we expect universities to do today, but this still feels like a meaningful measure of overall decay. At Dartmouth, you had all four years to pass the test and needed to take at least three physical education courses. Swim classes were free for everyone. There was no excuse for a non-disabled person to fail to learn -- yet they still got rid of the 50-yard swim test in 2021, on grounds of "equity." Getting rid of swim tests represents a broader refusal for our institutions to impose and enforce real requirements of any kind.
