@GoogleDeepMind has a long history of research with video games. We're gamers and many of us are former game devs. We have an immense respect for the craft and game developers. Games are a safe testbed for embodied AI research and provide rich learning challenges for AI agents.

Amiga Power magazine's Win a Job at Bullfrog! competition challenged programmers to write a Space Invaders game within two months. The competition resulted in both @MikeDiskett (ace developer) and @demishassabis (DeepMind AI founder) working at Bullfrog.

My tl;dr for games people: RL agents can learn how to play small games in real-time. At least here this works on one type of game. Designing sth where you want an NPC to get better as a human watches / plays with them? This seems potentially in reach now. youtube.com/watch?v=U93bUQ…

@LesDennis Dustin, or Gerald as she remembers him, was a childhood friend of my aunt. They lived closed to one another in York (I think Ambrose St), and she still speaks fondly of the little performances he used to put on for the other kids in the street.

Thank you for all the lovely memories of Dustin. It’s so thrilling to know so many of you remember him so fondly. Here he is before we teamed up. See how many of his impressions you can name.

In December 1993 (Amiga Format) a battle for the most lustrous coiffure took place. But who won? @UridiumAuthor or @llamasoft_ox ? Poll in thread.

Hugely honoured to receive the Breakthrough Prize alongside my wonderful colleague John Jumper! This is an incredible recognition of #AlphaFold and the impact it has already had - and a great credit to the amazing work and dedication of the entire AlphaFold team at @DeepMind
Breakthrough@brkthroughprize

“Change the world” is a phrase we hear a lot. But Demis Hassabis and John Jumper @DeepMind did. AlphaFold has solved the protein structure prediction problem, one of the central challenges in biology and medicine. They win the 2023 Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences.

@notch I remember seeing you at the BAFTA game awards after receiving your fellowship. You were alone, so I drunkenly decided I needed to shake your hand and thank you for Minecraft. Your security gently steered me away, saving blushes, but this is an excellent opportunity to thank you!

Remember that time I accepted like seven awards on behalf of Minecraft in one day? Yeah it's just now starting to sink in. Absolutely wild ride.

@mmalex That was a Mucky Foot thing too! Ours evolved into an interactive system tray thingy called "Choke the Chicken", which showed everyone the global status of the chicken (choked/not choked). Prior to committing you'd choke it if it were free, then release it once done @tom_forsyth

why chicken? well... the lovely and long-suffering jean-claude (lead engine coder) was still learning english... what started as a call of 'checking-in!' slowly evolved intoa franglais inflected 'chicken!'... and stuck. ah, happy stupid gamedev memories.

suddenly reminded of the old (early, black&white 1 era) lionhead custom of shouting 'chicken!' across the openplan office. we were unfortunate enough to use VSS, you see, a product so bad it boggles the mind. committing new code was *non-atomic* so you needed to stop others...
