“Mormon magic underwear.” That’s the phrase people throw around. It gets laughs. It gets clicks. But it’s also a perfect example of how Mormonism is being treated right now, mocked instead of understood. So I’m starting a short series. Not to defend it. Not to attack it. But to deal with it honestly. Let’s talk about what that actually is. Among members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the proper name is the temple garment, or garment of the holy priesthood. It is a sacred item tied to covenants made in their temples. Historically, this garment was introduced by Joseph Smith in the 1840s, particularly in Nauvoo. Early versions were very different from what is worn today. They were one-piece garments, extending from wrists to ankles. Those early garments included specific markings sewn into the fabric. That continues today in a simplified form. You’ll typically find markings over the chest, near the navel, and at the knee. In LDS teaching, these point to obedience, sacrifice, and remembrance of covenants. Over time, the garment has changed. It moved from a single piece to two pieces. Materials and cuts have been updated. More recently, there has been internal discussion because newer designs allow different fits, especially for women, including cuts that work with modern clothing. Now here’s where we need to slow down. Christians have no ground to mock sacred clothing. We have our own. Think of the scapular worn by the faithful, resting against the skin as a sign of devotion. Think of the vestments a priest puts on before the liturgy, each piece received with prayer. These are not costumes. They are outward signs of inward realities. The same principle is at work here, even if we disagree with the theology behind it. So critique the theology. Be honest about the differences. But mocking what people hold sacred without understanding it is not strength. It’s just noise.

Glad I canceled my daily wire subscription after Bentkey failed. I'm pretty sure these guys have no idea how culture works.

While my friend @RealMattFradd has been criticizing the LDS church, and Mormons (and fake Mormons) have been expressing outrage (and fake outrage), I went to see "The Book of Mormon," by the @SouthPark guys. My genuine take on the whole "are Mormons Christian or not" thing is: I really don't care what other people think. I know I worship Jesus Christ and that He is my Savior. I don't need the approval of others of my faith or other faiths.

Every member should watch this presentation. Why do people leave the Church according to the data? Most leave due to the history, however it's not just the history itself, it's how it has been presented. In other words, people feel gaslit and manipulated. The data also shows most people who leave the church, invest limitless hours and several years to study and wrestle with the issue before leaving. They aren't lazy learners, they aren't just excited to go sin, they take their membership extremely seriously. This is exactly why the Church is right to sue John Dehlin Not just because he pushes these absurd, saccharine lies But because he uses the word "our" He has always appealed to insider status to gain authority he does not have to persuade people who do not know any better

@defense_of_fam Modern feminism defends porn. It's not the 'same thing', it's the progenitor of it, as the sexual revolution popularized casual sex, which allowed for legalized porn. It also defends it in the form of books, which has the same effects on the brain as visual porn.

Hot take: In many ways, modern feminism is to women what pornography is to men. - They both demean and devalue the opposite sex. - They both gratify self. - They both cause friction and difficulties in relationships. - They both lie and distort reality. - They both create unrealistic expectations. - They both bring unhappiness.

@stackerco @latterdaylaura Ironically, the Jews killed Jesus because they worshipped the laws they created over God. The initial post somehow seems to lack awareness of that. And the self-awareness to realize that much of the church is in that position again.

I don’t really believe it. But even if it was 99%, truth is truth. People crucified the Son of God, you don’t think people could also leave His true church?

@TraviXai Further proof as to why I have absolute zero issue with Mormons. Do I agree with them? No. Can we have endless amounts of civil discourse and agree to disagree? Yes. I’ve never once had a Mormon attack me for my non-Mormon religious convictions.

@PopePiusIXStan This is literally the first claime in the Lectures on Faith. In fact, it is the first lecture. It saddens me that the Lectures on Faith were removed from the 'canon' of LDS scripture, because now we have people like this.

@TheAmiNereVar Fun fact I learned earlier this week: Meat is a relatively recent addition to the Japanese diet, only introduced after seeing the strength of European soldiers and observing that they ate beef and pork. It was controversial, too, because of Buddhist doctrine that forbad it.

@Utah_Cowboys My personal take is that "seeking after things they do not understand" is literal. We actively try to make the gospel more complicated than it is and needs to be. In the end, it's only about our relationship with Jesus, and everything else is periphery.

To me, this phrase is academia & academia alone. “The gospel is transformational, not transactional.” I think we attempt to outsmart ourselves far too often. Perhaps this is why Nephi declares 👇? Thoughts?

Most folks on LDSx had some interaction with @GrayM0untain, some good and some bad. Sadly, he recently passed away from severe health issues caused by the covid vaccine. He was bold in his opinions and did not back down. I had some productive interactions with him and learned several things from him. Naturally, I didn't agree with all of his opinions and thought his criticism of the brethren went too far sometimes. But I understood where he was coming from. I understand the hurt he felt, and I truly thought he wanted to regain the faith and testimony he once had. I had hope for him and defended him to others. Keep in mind he is not alone. Most of us have likely had someone we know who was injured or killed from the vaccines. We lost 1 young mother in our stake. A young bishop just a few miles away from me was killed from the vaccines. A sister in my ward had severe health issues for 3 years after she got the shot. Dozens of missionaries were injured from the vaccine, as were 1,000s of members. Similar to the way the Trump Administration has ignored the harm done from the covid vaccines, @Ch_JesusChrist has also remained silent. The church did quietly reverse its support of the covid vaccine in December 2023, but it was after so many had been injured or killed. To all those out there where injured themselves or have family members or friends who were injured or killed like @GrayM0untain, I hope you don't let this mistake of the church define who you are. I hope you can learn to forgive and have peace. There is soo much good and hope found in the restored gospel. There is healing and hope for all of us through the Atonement of Jesus Christ. He suffered for ALL of our pains and through Him we can be healed, learn to both forgive and be forgiven, and have joy both in this life and the life to come. I know many of you will disagree with me on @GrayM0untain and/or the covid vaccine. That's okay. I just hope we can support one another and help each other come closer to the Savior.

This is my cousin who ended up like a little brother to me. Very sadly, he did pass away. I saw many Mormons belittle him, be mean to him, because his stances on things. He took a vaccine because the church encouraged and urged it. It destroyed him. Took everything away from him. - He had an illness that took his entire life and dreams away. He was one of the smartest people I knew, also very handsome, eloquent, and artistic. I miss him deeply and I despise all you evil people who said personal mean things to him in his worst days. I know who you are, more importantly God knows who you are. He loved Jesus, family, and the outdoors. He had a way about him when conversing with him, he always made you feel important, and laughed at all the jokes. When talking with him it’s like he heard every single word and actually cared. He was a special soul and no one else like him. When you’re out in nature think of him because that was one of his favorite things. I miss you brother. Love you.
