Born in East Cottingwith, Yorkshire, England, in 1830, Slights had honed his hunting prowess from a young age, and his knowledge of the local bird populations was unparalleled. The punt gun he held in the photograph was a testament to his dedication and passion for the sport. The punt gun derived its name from its common usage on small boats called 'punts.' These nimble watercraft allowed hunters like Slights to approach large flocks of birds silently, catching them unaware before unleashing a powerful blast that could take down a staggering number of birds at once. During the early 1900s in the United States, the popularity of punt guns had become a serious threat to duck populations. The massive scale of hunting with punt guns led to significant declines in waterfowl numbers, prompting authorities to take action. Between 1900 and 1918, the punt gun and punt boat were outlawed in an effort to protect the endangered bird species. However, in the United Kingdom, the tradition of using punt guns persisted to some extent. Even in modern times, around 50 of these impressive firearms were still in use. Their primary purpose shifted from mass hunting to ceremonial occasions, such as Royal Ceremonies like Coronations or Jubilees, where their historical significance was honored. Slights' image with his punt gun stands as a captivating glimpse into the past, reminding us of the delicate balance between hunting for sustenance and conserving wildlife for future generations. His legacy as a skilled hunter lives on, a testament to the times when punt guns ruled the marshes, and hunters like him left their mark on history.

@ChrisHowellACA No one is saying that they can’t have a say. I was saying that it’s an odd decision from a Huntingdonshire newspaper to publish letters from politicians in Fenland and East Cams. Streatham is 28 miles from St Neots.

I’m a bit surprised at the Hunts Post letting prominent Fenland and East Cambs Conservatives use the letters page as a soapbox for their divisive political agenda.

@afc_ely @CambsLeague League rules state that Premier, Senior A and B have to have a referee. Then we are down to the location of match officials. We are short in certain areas of the County are are trying hard to rectify it.

How does ref allocation work in the @CambsLeague ? Today... all games in CSI Prem, Senior A, B, Div 1 had refs. (one had 3 officials) 9/10 in Div 2 did. 7/12 in Div 3 ... 9/13 in Div 4 ... 3 of our last 5 league games in Div 3 had no ref allocated.

@danielsmith89 @withplum @HLInvest If you withdraw cash from a S&S isa though won't that charge against your allowance? I'd be looking to transfer from plum ISA to another provider- sounds like what you did?

@LloydSSmart @withplum @HLInvest You can either withdraw as cash and then reinvest (in the same funds if you wish) or you can transfer directly fund to fund. I did ISA and Pension

@withplum So glad I moved away from Plum to @HLInvest about a year ago. Can invest in exactly the same funds at a fraction of the cost.
