In honor of filling out one whole stamp book in 2025 while puttering around the inaka like some sort of vagrant, I'd like to hand out awards for my favorites 🧵

@KarlSorrells @StatisticUrban Subsidizing diet soda and not subsidizing the normal stuff might actually lead people who are going to drink soda no matter what to pick a "healthier" option This might be financially beneficial to the healthcare industry as a whole

Allowing rotisserie chicken but banning soda from SNAP. Not really sure what that says about our current moment. I would personally at least like an exception for sugar-free soda.

I think it's not fair how I can go into a "western music bar" in nowheresville Niigata and have good conversations about a variety of topics but if a Japanese person goes into a jpop bar anywhere in the west they'll want to end it all

@PoltFan69 I know zoomers are used to this but it's *so* weird to me that a major distributor is just putting this on main now. Even when I would wake up at 3am bleary-eyed and turn on adult swim as a teenager could I see something this bad

I have opinions on the new red/blue button debate. I interpret it as a test of whether or not you are in a high trust or low trust environment. Choosing the red button guarantees your own safety but also ensures people will die because there is invariably going to be people who will vote blue for whatever reason. But choosing the blue button is only a viable option IF you are in a high trust environment. The blue/red button question, in my opinion, is more of a question of “do you trust the group you’re in?” Pure altruism & trust vs. guaranteed self-preservation So it depends on the group. All other things being equal, I don’t particularly want blue voters to die, so I’d ideally vote blue. But I’m not going to stake my life on that if the group I’m in is particularly untrustworthy. So again… it depends on the group. If I was in a situation where all the other voters were my closest friends & family, obviously I would choose blue. But if I’m in a group of people who don’t know each other and are openly hostile to each other, I am pressing red.

I will in this post judge every aspect of this individually ✅ Encouraging the kid to start some kind of side hustle. (This actually is just straightforwardly good.) 💩Loaning him the money at a high-interest rate to “teach him about the real world.” (“The world” I live in also includes the concept of dads helping their sons get started in life on favorable terms.) ⚠️ Middlemanning returned rugs. (This isn’t as stupid as some people think. Finding a market for returned goods is a perfectly reasonable endeavor, but it’s also probably a shitty business. If anything, this will teach the kid how hard it is to make money with these kinds of schemes.) 💩 Letting your kid drive around in an unsafe/unreliable car.
Brandon Doyle@Brandondoyle

This is my son. He is almost 16 and wants a vehicle. I refuse to buy him one and told him he needs to pay for it himself. He got a job as a rec basketball league referee and quickly realized how long it would take to save up enough money to get a $3k car making $12/hour. Then I showed him some cooler $6k options on Bring a Trailer and he got the itch to make more money. I gave him countless ideas to pursue. He wasn't feeling any of them. Then I decided to show him some podcast episodes from @mhp_guy (he's listened to some from Chris before and was a fan). No ideas were really hitting home until he heard an episode between Chris and @ShannonJean about reselling. He fell in love. So I showed him a few more and he was convinced that that was the route he should take. We started browsing B-Stock and then realized we need a state tax license and some other stuff so we got that all set up. Then we browsed some more. Endless deals. We settled on buying 115 rugs at an average of $13/rug after shipping. They're all Costco returns. Various sizes, some in better condition than others. He now has to figure out how to sell all these through my Facebook Marketplace account. I won't be helping him at all, other than answering questions and casually giving him strategic ideas here and there. If he can sell the rugs at an average price of $35 (keep in mind some are brand new and are 10' x 14' large), he'll make $2500 in profit. Then we can start car shopping :). P.S. Chris and Shannon - thanks for the motivation!!!

@hueoops I want to play FF14 (I actually did play a good chunk of it) My issue is the subscription model. You pay and then it’s like you have to play the game ALL THE TIME for 31 days of your life to make your money’s worth. I don’t like feeling pressured.

One of my friend's sons is just getting into both horror and boomer shooters, but he's still young enough that he isn't allowed to play M rated games. He was complaining to me the other day that there are no T-rated boomer shooters and I realized wow he's right.

@CraftingVegeto I find that the *most likely outcome* is there would be like 10% max of the population that pushed blue because they didn't understand the question but then 20-30% of people push blue to be selfless making the actual eventual tragedy much much worse

Okay, so after thinking about this red blue button dilemma for hours, here is where I landed lol At first glance, the correct pragmatic answer is obviously red. You survive no matter what. That part is still 100 percent true. Red is the logical self preservation move. You do not die no matter what the others do. But once you think deeper, you realize that blue actually has a strong moral and collective argument. Blue only needs "just" over 50 percent to save literally everyone, while red basically needs 100 percent for no one to die. So blue is the gamble that gives humanity the best shot at universal survival with the lowest bar. At the same time, tons of people are emotional as hell, not logical or pragmatic, and sadly a lot are straight up virtue signaling kings. That means there is a real chance we end up in that dangerous 40 to 49 percent blue zone where billions die and society collapses anyway. Even the survivors probably would not survive long after that. Good job everyone. So yeah, red is the logical self preservation move, and blue is the more morally correct gamble to try and save everyone. Both sides have a solid point. Having that said... Everyone on Twitter furiously shitting on the other side is an idiot. Blues calling reds selfish monsters are idiots. Reds who cannot even see the collective blue argument are idiots too. But here is the most important part imho. All of this is bullshit. This is just a Twitter thought experiment where everything is easy and fake. If this was real life, an actual button in front of you, and pressing the wrong one means you actually die, everything changes. Heart rate at 180, adrenaline spiking, shitting your pants. I firmly believe there is near 0 percent chance blue gets over 50 percent in a real scenario, which I am not saying is a good thing. All the virtue signaling idiots on the internet would secretly press red in a heartbeat. Sure, some actual idealists who care about the collective more than pure survival would still press blue, and sadly they would die. In a real terrifying dystopian situation like that, red is the only solution, and it sucks.
Tim Urban@waitbutwhy

Everyone in the world has to take a private vote by pressing a red or blue button. If more than 50% of people press the blue button, everyone survives. If less than 50% of people press the blue button, only people who pressed the red button survive. Which button would you press?

@Karai_Dan @itscoachgoodman Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that after said "blow up" they decided that the most important next step was to pose for a photograph that they could later use to garner sympathy online

@itscoachgoodman What could you possibly be doing that’s causing this much disturbance? I’ve lived in Japan a decade as a gaijin, ride frequently on the train with my young daughter, have friends with young children. No blow ups, no people telling us off. Perhaps this is an issue on your end.

This was after a blow-up on the train. There was another blow-up this morning. We were late for school today. Japan has proven to be a challenging place for our young family. We are told no, to be quiet, and that we cannot be here multiple times every day. It sucks to constantly feel so unwelcome—that our sheer presence is such a burden on others just because we have young children with us. This experience will make our family stronger. Knowing that helps even in the most difficult moments. There's been a lot of them.
