Chandra Levy was one of the first high-profile victims of illegal alien crime. At the time she went missing, suspicion was cast on Gary Condit, a Democratic congressman from California who she had been having an affair with. The fracas was such that Condit lost reelection the following year. He later sued VANITY FAIR for insinuating he had murdered her and settled out of court. The actual killer was Ingmar Guandique, a Salvadoran illegal alien who was already in jail under suspicion of having raped two other women in the same park where Levy's remains were found. He was sentenced to ten years for those assaults, but was not charged with Levy's murder until 2009 because the detectives assigned to her case failed to interview Guandique's other victims. Guandique was found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to 60 years in prison. He was later discovered to have raped women in El Salvador before his illegal entry into the U.S. Guandique was eventually deported to El Salvador in 2017, more than 15 years after he murdered Levy. The Levy murder disappeared from the headlines after 9/11 happened, but I remember. It was yet another on the long list of reasons I stopped being apolitical and voted for Trump in 2016. We are in a new phase of a very long war.
