For centuries, physicists believed that energy could neither be created nor destroyed, but they didn’t actually know why that was the case. Then, about a hundred years ago, a woman named Emmy Noether developed the mathematics that not only explains why energy is conserved, but also underpins much of modern physics, including key parts of General relativity. Noether was ahead of her time. She was the first woman in Germany to become a university lecturer and the only woman included in a team of experts assembled at Germany’s leading mathematics department, who were trying to understand the fundamental structure of physics. Using a subtle and elegant mathematical argument, Noether showed that the conservation of energy—and other quantities such as momentum—are direct consequences of symmetries in the laws of physics. For example, symmetry in time—the fact that the laws of physics do not change from one moment to the next—is precisely why energy is conserved. Her work helped resolve a seeming contradiction in Einstein’s theory of general relativity. After Noether died, Albert Einstein praised her as a creative mathematical genius.
