I’m a little late to the party, but where is physics/science Twitter headed before the collapse?

@jenseisert @skdh My two cents as a Canadian who did his PhD in Germany: the US and Canadian application systems were more uni-centric, which meant I knew how to apply to places I did not know anyone at, and could get into the uni without having a supervisor lined up.

@skdh Indeed, this is a good thing about the German education system that university education is basically free, but often still very good. I wonder why it is not more popular, say, among US students, as one can still enter a PhD programme in one of the major US places.

One of the, if not THE, most important factors for making higher education accessible for ppl from all social bgs is removing tuition fees. I'm always surprised how many Americans don't know that higher education is fapp free in many EU countries (small fees for transport & food)

Recently I’ve been fascinated by errors that emerge at scale. Like the fact that physicists’ natural tendency to procrastinate is a purely personal problem until 10000 of them have to submit their March meeting abstract at the same time.

@steve_quantum @qiskit Actually I’m no longer certain that terminal measurements behave this way in qiskit, but might be worth trying to see if it helps.

@steve_quantum @qiskit Under the hood maybe, but if you simulate a circuit with measurements at the end for 1000 shots, it will run the full simulation 1000 times. To avoid this, don’t terminate with measurements, but instead with save_probabilities qiskit.org/documentation/…

What is the fastest platform to simulate the QAOA using shots? @qiskit just takes way too long. Any suggestions?

First time back in Montreal since I left in 2018. It was nice to be greeted by the traditional guard of orange pylons as we crossed the border.
