@THemingford So it the person cant work due to whatever disability etc then fine. If they just cant find a job in their field and unwilling to take any job then no sympathy.

Imagine finding a 4 bed home your family could live in. £1,350 a month. Then realising support only covers £852. You do the maths again. And again. It never works. So you close the listing. Try another. Same result. Day after day. That is how people end up with nowhere to live.

Today marks the biggest shake-up of renters’ rights in a generation. The Renters’ Rights Act: ✅ends Section 21 evictions ✅limits rent rises to once a year ✅bans bidding wars ✅and stops discrimination against families, benefit claimants and pet owners.

@peterproperty @FT If they are flats/leasehold properties they will stay on the market for a LONG time as nobody wants them unless they are mega cheap! Landlords, instead of crying about tenants getting rights, be a good LL and continue to make money from your investment

FT (£) 700 rental homes ‘hit the market every day’ as British landlords sell up. Some 254,000 buy-to-let properties in Great Britain came on to the open market in the 12 months to the end of March, according to calculations by estate agent Savills. ft.com/content/334184… via @ft

This is a total and utter capitulation. Millions of leaseholders being decimated by developers, freeholders, “social housing” companies and local authorities put their trust in you, in us as a party. “End the feudal leasehold system” that was the promise. A shameful U-turn that violates a key manifesto pledge. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

🚨 5 key changes for tenants from 1st May 2026 🏠 The new Renters' Rights Act means: 1. Landlords can no longer evict tenants through no-fault evictions - they need a valid reason. No more bidding wars - landlords can’t ask for more than the advertised rent price. Landlords can only ask for a maximum of one month’s rent upfront. Landlords can’t just say no to pets - they must consider requests reasonably. No more fixed-term tenancy contracts. Rolling contracts will give more flexibility. NEW Bank of England holds interest rates at 3.75%, but its chief economist votes for a rise to 4%. Bank outlines 3 energy shock scenarios, with some rate rises indicated even if global energy prices fall from here. IF oil prices remain above $120 till year end, AND gas prices rise substantially Banks forecasts point to possibility of rates at 5.25% this year

A 21 yr old on £28k looking at £1.7k rent isn't doing anything wrong. The numbers just don't work anymore. Most people in this situation I know either house-share, live at home longer, get help from family or end up with some level of support. When did income stop covering it.
