Yes MS has been going downhill for quite some time, but just because it's getting a bad rap on twitter doesn't magically move all existing windows users to something else. So it will remain dominant for years to come, and even if it stops being dominant, it would still be a big market to support. That said, File Pilot is planned for MacOS and Linux as well.

@PikminGuts92 @Jonathan_Blow @theo That's it right, being a good developer, a good person even, is to realise you've made a mistake, own up to it, and work to be better. Nah, @theo only cares about engagement, and views that are "good" for him. Gotta curate that timeline.

True… However I’m assuming you’re trying to suggest than Jon’s language does exist. But I imagine in your mind “publicly available” is the only thing that matters because in your world, it doesn’t matter if something is good, only that it’s out there. Because you only care about engagement, rather than building something good.

>Doesn't publish said compiler, even after 10 years. Zig's Andrew Kelly did all of it in less than 6 years, and made a language which is in all regards, better than blow-lang, and significantly more suitable for systems programming. I like Johnathan Blow; but results speak.

@theo @cmuratori @rfleury Casey has worked with Jon… so he would know if he’s pleasant to work with. Jon obviously has technical skill. Jon has obviously shipped plenty of times and continues to do so. And I think you picked the last one because you are aware of the popular view of Jon’s attitude.

@theo @cmuratori @rfleury And I imagine that last one, is shaped by all the YouTube channels that like to clip from his stream about anything that’ll be controversial. You actually watch interviews with Jon, or his lectures and it’s a different story.

Actually, it's three, I missed that you cut "there" as well. Looking at the full quote, you can see he's actually talking about the environment of web dev. Not developers personally. He's arguing that the environment web developers are in is more complex than it actually should be, and the developers being "raised" in that environment are suffering as a result. What was your point again?

@theo @cmuratori @rfleury “You almost can’t be a good programmer there” It’s there in the video you included, why cut the first two words from the quote?

Well there's two parts to what you're saying there, so I'll split them out. The first part ("been awful to me and many of my friends") sounds like an objection to Jon's behavior, which is not what most people would assume is meant by "terrible developer". A complaint about personality as it relates to being a developer should come from someone who actually worked with Jon developing something. Even then, most people wouldn't really know that's what someone meant if they just said someone was a "terrible developer" - I hope you would agree the sentence "he's a terrific guy, but a terrible developer" would not sound odd to anyone, since the normal meaning of "developer" doesn't carry personality implications. So the only developer-skill-related assertion seems to be "someone who hasn't shipped in a decade", which I'm not sure I follow as a criticism applied to Jon. I guess I'll start by asking, how is shipping recency related to whether someone is a good developer? Should we be calling Donald Knuth a "terrible developer" now because he hasn't shipped a major codebase since TeX and METAFONT? How about Brian Kernighan? What has John Carmack shipped lately? All "terrible developers" now, I guess? Is the idea that we just forget all of their past achievements like they never happened? That said, if your goal is to ship things, how quickly you can ship them is not solely dependent on how "good" of a developer you are. It's also directly determined by what you are trying to ship. If primarily what you make are web frontends for other people's services, I would agree with you that not shipping in 10 years is a bad sign. On the other hand, if what you're making is a new language, new game engine, game editor, and game, and you'd like them all to be developed together so you can be sure you're considering design choices holistically, 10 years sounds pretty reasonable to me. In fact, I would argue that accomplishing such a feat at all is something almost no developer could do, let alone a "terrible" one. Off the top of my head, I can't think of anyone who has done that unless you include "toy" languages or very simple games - but JAI is actually one of the more powerful languages of those I'm familiar with, and Order of the Sinking Star is roughly a "double-A" game in terms of production value and engine capability. Finally, Jon's "not shipping" is an arbitrary distinction, especially in this context. Jon actually ships constantly, just not to you. JAI has an active beta program that supports a large number of projects written in JAI, and they receive regular updates to the tool chain. Those projects do themselves publish to the wider world (github.com/daafu/sokoban, for example, was published 3 years ago now). In a world where people only released beautifully finished compilers, with languages set in stone, then maybe I could entertain an argument that shipping beta versions of a language didn't count as shipping. But the reality is that most modern languages are in a state of perpetual beta, and show no signs of ever being "shipped" in any final form anyway. There is no code quality difference between a JAI beta release and, say, the latest release of Python, other than Jon didn't decide to put it on an open github. If anything, JAI beta releases probably break less existing code than Python releases do :) So honestly, I really think you're off base here. If you want to say you don't like Jon, go right ahead. Everyone has their own types of people they get along with, and the list of people I don't like on X is so long I've probably forgotten who half of them even are at this point. But "terrible developer"? It's simply not a credible statement about Jon.

@rfleury Jon literally shipped a new version of the compiler today. Just because @theo can’t see it, doesn’t mean Jon isn’t shipping. He’s just salty that Jon is better than him.

LLMs aren't intelligent, even on the latest models you can still get it into a loop where it keeps trying the same thing (even with slight variations) over and over again. It doesn't realise it's in a loop.

Where did Vi go? All these AI bros have a very shallow view, they see it do a segment of the style, and think "That's it solved! Traditional movie making is dead." One mentioned "We can all be James Cameron" on another one. No, you can't. There is more than how it looks on this shallow level. This is inconstant. If done right, this scene could have been played out by cosplayers acting and a director with an iPhone, IF the actors, director and editor have the right talent and eye. That's why stage plays work, not because of the looks, but because of the dialogue and acting. What they're not realising, is there's diminishing returns. We're supposed to have had fully self-driving cars by now (I'm talking EVERYWHERE, total human replacement) it's been researched for decades. This will be the same, it's going to sit in some weird uncanny valley. I can see it being used as a select SFX tool for certain things. But if you think you can make a movie or TV series from this, and have it look "right" it's not happening yet.
