A bill in Annapolis to curb PIA requests deemed to be "abusive" - pushed by AG Anthony Brown & @OAGMaryland - is denounced as overreach. Would produce a "chilling effect" on public and press, says Dem and Rep legislators and others. tinyurl.com/49txyfca

When reporters try to access public records, this is the type of response we're getting more frequently. Maryland's Public Information Act has no teeth and needs to be reformed.

In theory, local governments make laws in a transparent way that allow citizens to participate. But in practice, some wonder whether the Baltimore County Council is shutting people out of the legislative process. wypr.org/wypr-news/2023…

@WetLipHamilton @FoxForceFlacco @Willcsmithjr The bills were amended to restrict broadcasting certain trials. Judges would also have the discretion not to broadcast. Those amendments are not available online because they were never considered by the committees. Next years bills will drop with those amendments.

@FoxForceFlacco @Willcsmithjr Maryland’s courts do need more transparency (judges do & say 🤯 things), but HB0133 & SB0043 are badly drafted bills. The broadcast requirement is so broad that criminal trial witnesses in Baltimore City would routinely get recorded & posted to IG as 🐀🐀. Intimidation would 🚀.
