NEWS: Wake Forest forward Omaha Biliew is entering the transfer portal, he told @LeagueRDY. The former five-star recruit and McDonald’s All-American has played the last two seasons after beginning his career at Iowa State. He averaged 6.3PPG and 2.4RPG this season.

@CATUDEAC @CourtroomTan @CamLemons_ @DeaconSports Arizona State has 10x the alumni that Wake has. And many non-alumni in state who care about ASU athletics. It’s a whole different fundraising game. We don’t have the same pool of doners to draw from and the big ones are all tapped out.

@CamLemons_ @CourtroomTan @DeaconSports The unfortunate truth is we are a small school with a small alumni base in a small market with not a lot of brand power or national influence. Honestly any outside observer wouldn’t be surprised if we had the fewest resources in the power 4.

@CamLemons_ @CourtroomTan @DeaconSports Yeah maybe? But if there were money to be spent, I feel like we would be spending it. I suspect most of the DC giving is already tapped for other purposes - scholarships, non rev-generating sports, debt payments on infrastructure, etc.

@CourtroomTan @CamLemons_ @DeaconSports I feel like the problem is that we just don’t have the money. Period. Maybe we can fundraise to build a roster for a year or a few years, but we don’t have the enterprise to be able to field a consistently competitive team indefinitely - not in this age of rapid salary increases.

@CourtroomTan @CamLemons_ @DeaconSports So there just isn’t any money left. Not in a sustainable way. I feel like there either needs to be some changes (salary cap / long term contracts that would allow us to revert back to a developmental program) but without that we are doomed to be relegated from the power 4.

@CourtroomTan @CamLemons_ @DeaconSports And right before the NIL era we called on our biggest (only) donors to build new buildings, as that was the old way to invest and be competitive. We made a huge bet / investment right before the tables turned in a way that made that investment basically irrelevant.

Illinois State beats Wake Forest 78-75 in the 2nd round of the NIT. Deacons' season ends at 18-17 on Johnny Kinzinger's tiebreaking 3-pointer with 1.9 seconds left. WF led 59-50 with 9 minutes left and couldn't get stops after that. On to the portal.

@BSum94 @clifferrell @CamLemons_ It’s not that Wake doesn’t care - it’s because we are a tiny school with a small alumni base and a lot of fair weather fans, most of whom move out of North Carolina after graduation and don’t care enough to donate tons of money just to get us from 70th in NIL to 65th.

@CamLemons_ What level is Wakes NIL $'s and what schools do they realistically compete with? Are they in top 50? 75? 100? Once you see that then form expectations. If not top 50 then its going to be "rent-a-player for a year as they pass through moving up

I'm not saying Wake Forest didn't leave some meat on the bone and that they didn't blow some opportunities late this season. But their conference record this season (and in 2022) would have put them in the NCAA Tournament any other time the last 20-30 years.
