Over 10,000 Americans are waiting for a liver transplant. MIT Engineers developed injectable “mini livers” that could take over the functions of a failing liver. The technology could offer an alternative to transplantation or provide support until a donor organ is available. news.mit.edu/2026/injectabl…

For people who feel dizzy or lightheaded when they stand up, the body’s failure to stabilize blood flow can disrupt even the simplest daily activities. Researchers took aim at this problem by developing a portable, motor-driven abdominal binder that detects standing and delivers active compression to support hemodynamic stability. In a randomized crossover study, 20 healthy volunteers underwent supine-to-standing trials with no binder, a passive binder, or the active device while heart rate, respiration, and compression were tracked. The active binder provided higher, more consistent compression, reduced the standing heart rate rise by 4.4 beats per minute versus control, did not affect respiration, and was rated equally comfortable and easier to use. A smarter, responsive compression strategy could help individuals with orthostatic intolerance remain upright with greater steadiness, confidence, and independence, as suggested by these proof-of-concept findings. "Sleep has been traditionally thought of as an all-or-nothing phenomenon," says @MIT_IMES Professor Laura Lewis. "You’re either awake or asleep. But the new findings are showing that it’s much more of a spectrum than it is a category.” quantamagazine.org/how-the-brain-…

Moving beyond overly aggregated #ML metrics. New research from LIDS postdoc Olawale Salaudeen, PI Marzyeh Ghassemi, and collaborators reveals how commonly used, highly aggregated ML metrics can hide serious failures — and offers a method to correct them. bit.ly/4k5LMLE
