NEW: A man in Calgary has been charged with assault with a weapon after an SUV was allegedly driven into a group of protesters gathered outside a religious centre near Meridian Road SE and Centre Avenue on February 7. According to the Calgary Police Service, individuals associated with the centre allegedly came outside and threatened the protesters before the vehicle was steered toward the group, striking one person. The victim sustained minor injuries. The CPS Hate Crime Prevention Team assumed oversight of the investigation given the confrontation’s intersection of political and religious elements. After reviewing witness statements and security footage, police charged Payman Esmaeili, 49, of Calgary, with one count of assault with a weapon. He is scheduled to appear in court in May, and police say they are still assessing whether hate motivation was a factor.
