🐎 HANDS OFF OUR HORSES! 🇺🇸 The Minneapolis Mounted Patrol — Minnesota’s last remaining mounted police unit — is once again fighting for its future. City Council funding cuts have put this vital community asset on the chopping block, with the current contract expiring at the end of August. As a spokesperson for the Minnesota Fraternal Order of Police, Kevin Rofidal was proud to speak about why these officers and their horses matter: “They want those officers 10 feet up looking over the crowd and keeping things safe, and when the horses are there, there aren’t any problems.” Mounted units provide an unmatched visible deterrent, build positive community connections at events like parades and National Night Out, and deliver proven, effective policing. City Council Member Aisha Chughtai claimed the police department is “bankrupting our city” and suggested better use for the funds. This is not true — and it’s another clear attempt to defund the police under the guise of budget concerns. The real priority should be keeping our communities safe, not slashing proven crime-prevention tools. A typical annual budget for the Mounted Unit is around $225,000. The Minneapolis Mounted Police Foundation is ready to help with supplemental funding, but the City Council must allow the city to accept it and restore full support in the budget. Thank you to the brave officers from the Owatonna Police Department, supported by the Steele & Rice County Sheriff’s Office and other agencies, for your service and professionalism under fire.
