Here is some fabulous news on the International Day of Forests 2025. Tamil Nadu is on a Mission to create new Mangrove forests & restore degraded ones.Through strategic afforestation & ecosystem revival efforts, the state is reinforcing its natural coastal defense and fostering biodiversity through Green TN Mission. New Mangrove forests have been planted in 5,937.9 acres while restoration of degraded Mangroves forests has been done in 3,539 acres across 10 districts, Chengalpattu, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Pudukottai, Nagapattinam, Thiruvarur, Thanjavur, Ramanathapuram,Thoothukudi and Chennai. The best news is this is being done with local community participation. This will give a massive biodiversity boost to local livelihood of fisherfolk, strengthen climate resilience as these forests act as natural shields against coastal erosion and will help in carbon sequestration being the best natural carbon sinks, tackling climate change.
