I'm furious about this. I'm a parent and one of my children who falls in this age category has faced very serious in person bullying at school that extended out into social media. It was all encompassing and seriously harmful. So I understand the potential for seriously negative impact from social media on young people. But the single most important thing that got them through it was their friendship online with kids in the US. 1 in particular who became a very close friend who was part of a larger group. They game together but spend the time chatting and working on plans for the future. It's a true friendship. Talking about business ideas, culture, etc, for hours everyday. Without that, they would have had absolutely no outlet and been doomed to only exist in a reality in which they have been completely outcast. As a parent, I monitor social media use using already available tools. I create accounts myself and know who is being interacted with. I set up curfews for certain apps on all devices but make sure I allow for the positive interactions and friendships to happen. As some are in the US, that means access at late hours but I'm entirely capable of managing this and I know the trade offs involved and then manage through those as well. I talk with my children directly about the risks, what to do, what not to do and why. If the government moves forward with these blanket curfews, that will cut my child off from their best friend for good which will very seriously impact their mental health. I will absolutely not accept the government harming my child in this manner.

🚨 NEW: Keir Starmer will introduce nightly social media curfews for 16 and 17-year-olds as part of the Government's social media ban [@thetimes]

Typical June in Canada sees an estimated 150-250 cases of flu. This June in Canada is seeing an estimated 98,500-168,100 estimated Covid cases in one week. This is considered a "low" period for Covid. This much sickness year round is not acceptable or sustainable.

Did you know that many people working in supermarkets such as Tesco and Asda still qualify for Universal Credit because their wages aren’t high enough to cover the cost of living? That’s not a welfare problem. That’s a low-pay economy. Taxpayers end up subsidising low wages while working people are told to work harder. Britain doesn’t have a benefits culture problem. It has a wage problem.

There has only ever been a single randomised control trial to measure the benefit of folic acid in low risk women. For every neural tube defect 'prevented', nine babies died (mostly miscarriages). It was then declared 'unethical' to research further... hartuk.substack.com/p/six-saved-ba…

Today is my birthday. I turned 40. But nobody knows it anymore, except my close family. Because I am socially isolated due to Long Covid for four years now. People simply forgot me. They forgot us.

@thecrimeanalyst @DrJessTaylor #VAWG Another judge whose sentencing needs to be examined. How did this level of violence and aggression not incur an immediate custodial sentence?
🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 𝙱𝙴𝙰𝚁 🇬🇧@RangersBear55

This is Callum Peacock. He battered his girlfriend with a golf club, threw bleach and paint at her, and burned a memorial shirt of her deceased grandmother but has avoided an immediate prison sentence. The 19-year-old defendant, from St Helens, subjected his partner to a cruel three-hour ordeal inside their home. Police officers arrived at the flat to find the victim covered in white paint and curled up in a ball on the bathroom floor. She was audibly sobbing and shrieking through a hole in the door, which was still smouldering and smoking. During the assault, the teenager hit her with a broom handle and a golf club before putting her in a chokehold from behind. When she tried to hide in the bathroom, he smashed the door with the golf club and used an aerosol and a lighter to set fire to it. He then threw dumbbells and a bottle of bleach at her, causing the liquid to splash onto her body. In what was described in court as an extremely selfish act, he took hold of a memorial t-shirt featuring a photograph of her deceased grandmother. He set fire to the garment right in front of her while telling her that her nan would rot in hell. The attack came just two days after another incident where he struck his girlfriend with a hammer following an argument. Following his arrest, he openly threatened his victim in front of police officers, stating that he was going to smash her face in when he got out. But he has now walked free from court after a judge handed him an 18-month imprisonment suspended for 18 months. The court heard he had already spent nearly five months in custody on remand, which the judge noted was the equivalent of a nine-month sentence for a teenager with no previous convictions. He was also given a five-year restraining order and a rehabilitation activity requirement of up to 20 days. Another kick in the teeth, metaphorically speaking to the brave young woman who endured his cowardly attacks. The justice in this country cares more about the accused than the victims.

A very neat summary. Funny - Wired knew this in May 2020, and then, forgot? It's just not trendy to talk about this, nobody wants to hear it, so people don't.

@jeterfan28 @julietlandau @DavidSi50785942 @coinsedgemedia @buiosegreta @bonniegrrl @RipperGiles17 @RiverCityOtter @ParkerTechGuy @BuffyLookBook Turns out Long COVID, pediatric strokes, pneumonia & lots of other problems happen because COVID isn’t a respiratory disease, like the flu. It’s a vascular disease. Like SARS 1 in 2003, hantavirus, dengue and Marburg. The mechanism is organ damage via blood vessel injury. 4/🧵

New study shows how SARS2 ORF8 protein hijacks your lungs immune cells to spread the virus more efficiently and trigger long-term inflammation. This isn’t just acute illness - the mechanism drives chronicity directly🧵
Vipin M. Vashishtha@vipintukur

A hidden viral protein may be one of the key drivers of severe COVID-19 lung damage. ➡️ Researchers found that #ORF8, an accessory protein secreted by SARS-CoV-2, can “reprogram” lung macrophages, making them more susceptible to infection and triggering pyroptosis—a highly inflammatory form of cell death. 1/

Researchers found autoantibodies in long COVID that target neural proteins and can directly cause symptoms. Patient IgG transferred to mice triggered fatigue, pain, weakness and balance problems, supporting autoimmunity as one mechanism. nature.com/articles/s4157…

I have to raise my severe concerns over this RECOVER trial. Exercise can be dangerous in Long Covid even without PEM (e.g. cardiovascular risk). "Structured exercise-pacing" can be dangerous with PEM-like manifestations. At any rate, exercise is no cure for Long Covid
Jon Douglas@atranscendedman

RECOVER-ENERGIZE will test 2 Long COVID strategies based on PEM status. Rehab for exercise intolerance without PEM and structured pacing for PEM, with safeguards to avoid exertional harm. medrxiv.org/content/10.648…

@lauracollective @Naomi_D_Harvey @SpeakOutNow16 Thank you for this link. I'm compiling a list of CMV related treatment articles to take to NHS GP to make a case for trialling antivirals. Surely having had 31 fevers each lasting on average 10 days is enough time to have watched & waited to see if I'd recover under my own steam?

@TalkVenlafaxine @Naomi_D_Harvey @SpeakOutNow16 Sorry, my reply wasn't clear. I haven't heard back from Dr Claire despite emailing multiple times since Dec. Separately, I also don't understand how the NHS has just left me having fevers for this long, even with my private tests they could use to treat me from.
