Ko Tinmaung, a Toronto-based Rohingya activist, has been released after more than 96 hours in Israeli detention following Israel’s hijacking of the Global Sumud Flotilla and the abduction of its civilian participants. His testimony is horrifying. He says he was beaten in a dark room by more than five people, kicked, punched, tasered in multiple places, and handcuffed so tightly that the restraints cut into his wrists and restricted blood flow. He says he still needs treatment for concussion-like injuries. He also says he witnessed other detainees with broken ribs, head wounds, blood from their ears, eye injuries, broken noses and broken teeth. Most gravely, he alleges sexual assaults, including people being tasered on their genitals. Tinmaung’s testimony also exposes the racial dimension of Israeli violence. He says he was mocked as “Ahmed”, assaulted further, laughed at because of his skin colour, and treated as if his passport had no value because he was brown. This was a civilian-led humanitarian mission carrying food, aid and basic supplies to Gaza. So where is Canada? Where are the human rights organisations? Today, we remember George Floyd, who was murdered by a former Minneapolis police officer six years ago.   That moment changed our city forever.

My husband and I booked a flight months in advance for our honeymoon. We booked 4A and 4C in First Class so we could talk, relax, and celebrate. We board the plane, get to row 4, and there is already a woman sitting in my seat, 4C. My husband politely looks at her and says, "Oh, hi, sorry, I think you might be in my wife's seat." The woman looks up, sighs dramatically, and says, "The gate agent moved her. I need this seat because of my medical condition. She's in 12D." 12D is Comfort Plus. Not First Class. I immediately look at my phone—sure enough, the airline app had refreshed while we were walking down the jet bridge and changed my seat without a single notification or warning. My husband instantly flagged down the lead flight attendant. He explained that we paid thousands for these specific seats for our honeymoon, and I was absolutely not moving to a lower class because someone else made a last-minute demand at the gate. The flight attendant went to speak to the woman, who instantly started crying, claiming we were "harassing" her. The flight attendant then turned to my husband and whispered, "Can't you just be a gentleman so we can take off on time?" The sheer audacity. My husband stood his ground. "If she has a medical need for First Class, she can buy a First Class ticket. Give my wife her seat back, or get the supervisor down here right now." They eventually moved the woman back to her original seat in coach, but for the rest of the flight, the flight attendant completely penalized us. She ignored our drink orders and literally slammed our snack baskets onto our trays. Sorry for wanting the seat we actually paid for, I guess?

One piece of advice my gym instructor in the academy yelled to my entire gym block one hot summer day in the old Police Academy “you are a NYPD cop now, you’re not gonna be hanging out with the boys on 18th ave getting into fistfights like Macari over here”. Did he stereotype me? Yes. Was he wrong? No, he made an excellent point. In my opinion, the sharpest, most in tuned cops grew up in NYC, but regardless of the neighborhood you grew up in NYC you have to leave that life and the lures of your past behind you, upon entering into the NYPD. Depending upon your family’s socioeconomic status If you grew up in NYC the departmental charge of “Criminal Association” is an absolute joke, as nearly everyone you grew up around has a criminal record, and you may even yourself. You definitely have had some run ins with the NYPD. If you still live in NYC nearly everyone you interact with in your daily life has some sort of a criminal record. The overwhelming majority of NYPD cops who grew up in NYC come from low income and middle class upbringings. You can charge them all with “Criminal association” and be right but it doesn’t mean they are involved in any type of criminal activity or even hang out with criminals. The other issue is social media. These cops could have been just joking around with a kid they know from the neighborhood, either through work or growing up there but taking a picture or throwing up signs in or out of uniform is dumb, unprofessional and unacceptable. This obviously needs to be investigated and there should be serious discipline regardless of the outcome. This photo doesn’t necessarily mean these cops are gang members or dirty cops, it could just be they are immature and were not trained properly in knowing the responsibility they now bear. A friend of mine was fired from the NYPD when we were rookies for posting a photo of himself with his guns with a biggie song in the background. Was he a gang banger? No he was just immature and trying to impress girls. It cost him his job. This should be a lesson for ALL NYPD cops. Wearing that uniform is a privilege, you should wear it with pride and never want to do anything to disgrace it or the name under your shield. As I always say “Welcome to the NYPD, you are a celebrity now, without the money, and hopefully with the muscle” Any mistake you make for the rest of your life will be front page news, if you’re lucky the great and heroic actions you perform may make page 32. SMARTEN UP. Also shoutout to my gym instructor for always breaking my balls don’t want to blow your name up but i always appreciated you being harder on me.
