July 14, 1984: TONIGHT, BOSTON. We won't let Black Saturday memories take the timeline in the same way that the WWF took Georgia's time slot. But, tonight at the Boston Garden, we've got a big title match between Hulk Hogan and possibly his best opponent, Paul Orndorff. We hear from a murderer's row of Hogan, Orndorff, Jesse Ventura and Rowdy Roddy Piper. Results courtesy of The History of WWE: Boston Garden – 14,000 B. The Knicks got Jack Kayil in the second round too. 19 points, 4 assists, 3 steals. 6-of-13, 3-of-7 from three. Watch the handle, watch the pace. He creates off the bounce, doesn't rush, doesn't panic. Not too bad for a second-round rookie in his second summer league game. The Knicks won a title and they're still scouting like a lottery team hunting gems. They might have found another one. (@IQfor3)

The Hogan vs. Kamala bout was the main event of the first ever pro wrestling show I ever saw live. There's a moment where Kamala hits the big splash and live, the entire Garden all held their breath and acted like the world was about to end...and then Hogan kicked out. At 12 years old, a hell of a memory that's still pretty vibrant many decades later.

@RenuMukherjee1 Where are you getting g that the goal is to destroy specialized high school. Letting in a few more children of color based on other metrics besides just a test won’t destroy these schools

Of course diversity, as a justification for racial preferences, existed long before 2020! It comes from 1978’s Regents of the University of California v. Bakke. 2020 was just a year in which the diversity rationale had particular force. And the Ivy League isn’t a poor comparison at all. Just consider how much damage the diversity rationale has caused, as revealed by 2023’s Students for Fair Admissions: Asian American kids penalized simply because of their race. Low-income kids overlooked by universities’ reliance on soft variables over objective measures of academic preparedness. Black and Hispanic kids stigmatized because of racial preferences. Rampant academic mismatch. And the goal is to destroy NYC’s specialized high schools—bastions of opportunity and upward mobility for kids who cannot afford private tuition or a move to the suburbs—in the same way?! How many times does a policy need to fail for it to be thrown into the dustbin of history?
Shabazz Stuart@ShabazzStuart

First, this argument existed long before 2020. Secondly, Ivy League universities are an extremely poor comparison point bc none of them are close to endorsing reliance upon a standardized test for admission. Proposing this would get you laughed out of an admission hall.

People like this can't be taken seriously. Blocking replies means she just likes to shout vague generalities that show her ignorance of the NYC system and then pat herself on the back and declare she "did something."
Kaliris Salas-Ramirez, PhD@DrKYSR

At the end of the standardized tests are not the best metric for admissions to anything. We need to abolish the SHSAT and commit to providing a quality education to all of our NYC students. We the rest of our schools were funded like the SHS it would be a different ball game

As I wrote recently for @NRO, one of the reasons the Ivy League reinstated standardized testing, other than academic preparedness, is that without it, admissions officers prioritize “soft variables” that disproportionately benefit high-income applicants. Standardized tests, like the SHSAT, are an equalizer and tool of upward mobility.

1 in 5 NYC public school students are Black, but at Stuy - our most prestigious high school - 3 of ~800 incoming Freshmen are Black. We urgently need state legislation to modify the admissions process. A single test should never be only factor deciding who gets in & who doesn’t.

@nicolegelinas I'm genuinely curious why the controversy is puzzling. multiple public schools admit laughably low amount of Black and Brown children. Whatever your solutions are, the pushback against this makes sense if you don't like segregation

The perennial controversy over the exam schools is puzzling. If you have your heart set on going to an exam school, you have to study hard for the exam, take the exam, and score highly. If you are ideologically against exam schools, that's fine, that is your free choice, but then don't complain about exam schools! Plenty of other schools out there that meet plenty of other needs and desires. This is called choice ...

@JeremiahDJohns We already grew the pie. Used to be 3 socialized schools and now there are 8. Still have the same segregation. A single test shouldn’t be the marker that assesses the intelligence of 14 year olds .

I think you would help black students much more if you raised the education standards at schools citywide than by doing affirmative action for a couple dozen seats at Stuyvesant. Lincoln is in a scarcity mindset - the most important thing is arguing about who gets which piece of a fixed pie. Instead we should grow the pie, raise the quality of education every student is getting. The problem isn't that the admissions process is racist. It's that far too many kids, often disproportionately black kids, are receiving terrible quality instruction for most of their lives, and by the time admissions season rolls around they're so far behind they have zero shot at a school like Stuy.

Propose whatever SHSAT reform you like, but if it’s a holistic application process that relies on some vague test or factor that miraculously makes it harder for Asians with high test scores to get in to those schools, it will get shredded by the Supreme Court

I’ve been getting this reply a lot, and it misses the point of my post. Yes, the Ivies require more than just standardized tests. But a reason these selective schools brought their testing requirements back is because the “other things” they relied on—“soft”variables, such as extracurriculars and essays—did the opposite of furthering “equity.” They helped high-income applicants and disadvantaged talented low-income applicants! Consider, for example, the case of Dartmouth: nationalreview.com/2026/06/the-iv…

This argument is so 2020, and it’s been thoroughly debunked. Every single Ivy League school has now reinstated standardized testing requirements. Why? Because admissions processes that rely on soft variables to ensure “diversity” disproportionately benefit affluent students! If one truly cared about furthering “equity” and opportunity, then one would celebrate tests like the SHSAT, not try to dismantle them.

@BrandondelPozo Im confused by your logic. Why is a single standardized test the only mechanism to evaluate ability? Surely an admissions process can be designed that ensures diverse and qualified students access our best schools? Indeed, Brown and every elite college does this…

Brown plays a role of selecting youth to become part of our elite, it’s reasonable to say you don’t want that to be decided purely by tests. But Stuyvesant plays a role of actually educating children. The education you can provide is contingent on the caliber of the student, and standardized testing alone is the best measure for that.
