After 2.5 months, several of my intervention students are now reading on grade level. ✅ explicit code-based instruction ✅ challenging text ✅ knowledge and fluency building I think this "science of reading" thing actually works! 😉

If you want to align your practices with the science and research on how we learn to read, it starts with training, not curriculum! #scienceofreading #literacyandjusticeforall

When you ask the class if they have any questions, and nobody raises their hand… that does NOT mean everyone understands.

Want to grow better writers? Teach reading! Want to grow better readers? Teach writing! Every classroom should have a reading and writing partnership (with plenty of time for independent practice)📝 📚 #LiteracyTipTuesday #RSDreading #RSDwriting

How do you make sure students have access to books during holiday breaks… Audiobooks? Links with Text to Speech? Ability to Borrow Books from School? Access to high-quality, interesting texts is crucial. #MCLC

Questions to ask when designing assessments: 🍎 What skill/standard am I measuring? 🍎 Do my students trust me enough to express their learning of the skill? 🍎 What barriers to expressing their learning do my students face? 🍎 What actions will I take based on the outcome?

Praise students on their efforts, not just their success. Try things like "Great job focusing" and "I can tell you were really concentrating".

Myth: Reading and writing letters backwards is the main sign of #dyslexia. Fact: Some kids with dyslexia write letters backwards and some don’t. So, letter reversal isn’t necessarily a sign that your child has dyslexia.
