You know what’s sad? That @MagoolaRachel who worked tirelessly on this copyright law is not even being mentioned, or interviewed. Tuli mu awamidu lemidu lesidu.

Yesterday at the CeLPII roundtable, we explored how intellectual property can truly be treated as an economic asset, not just something to protect, but something that can be valued, leveraged, and financed. For those of us working in film, music, and storytelling to influence social behaviour, this is a game-changer. Our work already carries cultural relevance and reaches audiences, but without clear ownership, proper documentation, and predictable revenue, that value doesn’t translate into real opportunities, like accessing loans or growing sustainable creative businesses. What makes these conversations exciting is how they tie into ongoing national efforts. Discussions at Parliament of Uganda and across the creative ecosystem are beginning to align policy, finance, and legal frameworks, creating a space where creatives can finally use their intellectual property as collateral. The pathway is clear when we strengthen ownership structures, track revenue carefully, and leverage digital platforms to make IP bankable. Done right, intellectual property will become more than protection for creatives and morph into capital for creators to grow their impact and their businesses. #AfricaCreativesAlliance #CreativeEconomy #IntellectualProperty

Hon. Rachel Magoola delivered an inspiring keynote, calling for a shift in Uganda’s creative sector from handouts to empowerment. She emphasized that while creatives shape culture, heal, and entertain our society, many are still not fully benefiting from their intellectual property. Creatives must formalize their work and embrace business practices to unlock real value. @MagoolaRachel @AfricaCreAlli #CreativeEconomy #IntellectualProperty #PolicyDialogue

The copyright and Neighbouring rights bill.was passed on the 16th of March. It has been a long three or so years since I seconded a private member to propose the amendment. Stakeholders across the domains have contributed greatly.

Every great story deserves the ability to thrive! 🎬 Working together with young filmmakers under the @ikonawards Young Filmmakers Fellowship Program & the Leesu FemPower Initiative, we have seen how creativity lies in stories just aching to be told; however, some of those stories never see the light of day because of hefty production costs. At the Centre for Law, Policy and Innovation Initiative (CeLPII) Round Table Talks, we’ll be discussing how to turn creativity into more than just an art form, but into a bankable asset. Because we believe edutainment has a strong bearing on social change, we will be joining the Round Table Talks to see how young storytellers can monetise their Intellectual Property (IP) to finance their dreams. Join the conversation to discover how these technical and policy reforms are being designed to support the growth and financial independence of storytellers across Uganda. DATE: March 19th TIME: 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM EAT #CeLPIIRoundTableTalks

As a storyteller, I’ve seen first-hand how many brilliant ideas never make it to the screen simply because of a lack of capital. It is time we change that narrative in Uganda and Africa as a whole. At the Policy Roundtable Talks organised by the Centre for Law, Policy and Innovation Initiative (CeLPII) & the Africa Creatives Alliance (@AfricaCreAlli), all roads will lead to @MotivUG this Thursday 19th March, for discussions on why increasing access to credit services like loans will lead to game-changing results in fuelling the production abilities of many creatives across Uganda. The talks will position us to do more than just talk about the limitations brought about by the short funding pools and pivot us to increase the creation of a financial environment where our filmmakers can scale their work and compete globally. We’ll be speaking on how we can bridge the gap between financial institutions & the creative sector to ensure our stories get the investment they deserve. #CeLPIIRoundTableTalks
