After @tryramp’s Series E and E-2, I got congratulatory texts saying, “I hope you finally get a break!” My answer on both: “No days off.” After the E, I flew to Detroit to host an event with our FI Channel team, and today I’m in Seattle with our Enterprise team for tech week.

New fund! Please send me your troublesome ringleaders...
Roy E. Bahat@roybahat

Yes, we are actively investing. In fact, today we announced @bloombergbeta has a new fund to invest – our fifth. Startups keep evolving, faster than ever, and we know the best way we can support them is by staying steady, a constant on which they can depend. So our new fund is the same as the previous ones. --- Though it’s our first new fund in a world after generative AI, vibe coding is everywhere, engineers keep getting faster thanks to that AI, and AI startups hit revenue records all the time... We're doing what we've always done. We still… > Want to serve extraordinary founders who define the future of work. > Put #foundersfirst. > Invest as early as day zero, and as late as our up-to-$1M-or-so first checks allow (i.e., pre-seed and seed). > Define the "future of work" to extend beyond productivity tools, to how work can serve everyone. > Commit to making the startup world welcome to people of all backgrounds. > Invest from a $75M fund. Our three equal investing partners: @karinklein (who continues to run the "Acela corridor"), @jamescham, and me. (Well, we did recognize that @AngKMartin is a partner -- because we need operations to be great as investors.) Modeled on Bloomberg LP, we still aspire to be the most transparent investors. And we're here whether the market goes up or down. None of that has changed. Same as 2022, same as 2019, 2016, 2013. --- What’s different is… well… we’ve got more evidence we’re right where we like to be: > 93 founders we’ve backed have become millionaires — and 24 of those have made $10M or more > Founders we’ve backed have gone on to raise more than $10B > 10 startups we’ve backed are worth more than $1B (Flexport, Replit, MasterClass to name a few!) > Startups we back outperform — worth $24M more at next round We’ve backed extraordinary founders like @Replit’s @amasad and @HayaOdeh and @Flexport’s @typesfast, where we were the first VC to say yes to both companies, along with companies like @AirspaceIntel, @CampusGrad, @MadeWithCapsule, @LambdaAPI, @LaunchDarkly, @MasterClass, @Netlify, @ShieldAITech, @weights_biases (just acquired by @Coreweave), and more. We’ve also been busy since last time, but since X (in which we are small shareholders after they acquired Laskie) may penalize me for links, I won't tell you that here :) Go look at the one named after a color and what's in the air for that one. Our firm is more than our partners and today, our team includes @AngKMartin, @loriberenberg, @amytam01, @KB2o22, @moraaonyonka (and assists from @megmbolger!). We of course remain close with those who have worked on our team, including @shivon @strickland_dan @theamberyang @minney_cat @harleysugarman @sydneyjtiedt @lisawehden @ShainaConners @morganpolotan @cody_mccauley among others! --- And we’re forever grateful to @MikeBloomberg, a founder backing us so we can back more founders. Cycles continue! We want to be the first text for early-stage companies, partners through your journey, working with winners. If you know a founder who’s a great fit for us, please share this! "Yes, we're actively investing."

It has been a busy few months! Somehow, I find myself with one more bit of news: I am transgender, and I'm in the middle of a gender transition. 🏳️‍⚧️ I am changing my name to Tess (she/her). I am out at home and at work and now you know, too. That's the gist. If the story interests you, more below. [If you are having a 🤯 moment, that's totally normal! I'll wait. :)] Alright so... this is news for most people in my life, but it isn't for me. It's something I have struggled with deeply for over 25 years, mostly in denial of what it was and what it meant. As a kid I struggled with shyness and social anxiety. I learned to hide parts of me and fake others so I could fit in. Not just thoughts about gender, but also things like being a nerd, anything I worried made me weird or strange or unlovable. It's a kind of mask that I wore, consciously at first, but increasingly invisible even to me. As I approached 40 last year, I found myself gaining the bravery to interrogate these feelings, educate myself about them, and take steps to be happier, calmer, and more present for the people who matter most in my life, starting with my amazing wife and wonderful kids. I don't know exactly what untangled this web of thoughts for me. My best guess is I got to a point in my life where I could breathe and reflect and for the first time ever, worry less about achieving in the eyes of others. I have gained a lot of strength over the last many months. In spite of all that, the truth is that writing this, and posting it here, is an incredibly scary thing. I've come to see my professional network as a kind of consolation prize for suppressing parts of me I thought the world might judge, things that would prevent me from achieving a career I was proud of or building a family I could love and care for. The thing with consolation prizes is they mean you didn't get what you were hoping for, and I realize now that the thing I missed out on was being myself, openly and without fear, or at least with courage and bravery. In the back of my mind in nearly every social interaction in my life has been this lurking question, "What if they knew?" Would they still like me? Respect me? Want to work with or for me? I hid from the answers to those questions. That path served me for a time, but the healthier path, the one I am choosing, is to say: Be who you are. Let people come into or out of your life of their own accord. These days I don't have to ask "What if they knew?" anymore around the house or at work or with my friends, and by telling you all, I don't have to ask that here, either. It's a special kind of peace I never thought possible. It's going to be hard to believe this, but I promise, it's true: while the news sounds huge and life defining, it's quite the opposite. I carried this inside me and I'm finally setting it down. Yes I look different, and that will play out more over time. Yes I am changing my name. But the thoughts were always there, the secret strain on my life was always there. I'm free of that, now, and with that comes a lightness that far exceeds the awkwardness you might imagine I feel. Truly, and I mean this: things are easier for me now. As complex as this whole thing seems from the outside, it is deeply, profoundly simplifying on the inside. I am at peace. Thanks for listening. If you made it this far, I'm flattered. I write all of this partly for catharsis, but it serves another more important role. Product Management, and especially product leadership, has near zero trans representation. At times I wonder if seeing others like me live openly would have helped me when I was suffering. Perhaps I would have figured myself out a bit sooner. Regardless, I feel compelled to speak up and out and to be that representation for others. Living openly and showing people like me that it is going to be okay helps me forgive myself for many years of confusion, fear, and shame. And if this note resonates with you in any way and you want to talk about it, my DMs are open anytime. Hang in there; it gets better. 💜

Analytics pricing sucks. Amplitude is finally changing that! For the last 5 years, pricing is the top cited issue for adopting Product Analytics generally and Amplitude specifically: news.ycombinator.com/item?id=354657… g2.com/products/ampli… userpilot.com/blog/amplitude… reddit.com/r/SaaS/comment… Let me explain what sucks about analytics pricing and then I'll share how we're solving it. First, it's hard to know how pricing scales as you grow. While the free plans in analytics can be generous (we paved the way here 8 years ago with 10M events for free: amplitude.com/blog/the-futur…), the jump to paid leaves people with sticker shock. Nobody wants to go from getting something for free to suddenly paying $50,000 a year. If you don't know how much you're going to pay, you are scared of getting started on anything at all in case you can't afford it later. Second, the event model is broken. It's extremely difficult to know how many events you'll send, which makes understanding how much you'll pay impossible. You risk getting a massive surprise bill one month because you accidentally instrumented something incorrectly. Every time you're instrumenting another event, you're thinking, "Is this worth it?" This leads you to ration the events you do track, undermining the whole purpose of analytics. When you don't instrument, you get less value from analytics and then end up wanting to track even less, which leads to less value and so on in a negative spiral. Third, you have to pay for multiple products right off the bat to have a fully functioning data stack: CDP, analytics, experimentation, session replay, and more. This can lead to five or six different vendors (and their sales processes!) As a result, for many companies, the cost of their analytics infrastructure and applications is second only to that of their hosting services. Even once you've set these products up, it's a pain to integrate data between all of them. I don't think I've met a single company that feels they're "done" when it comes to the setup of their data stack. Today, we're changing all of that by introducing Amplitude Plus. Amplitude Plus is a self-serve plan that offers the best of Amplitude for the best price on the market— starting at $49 a month. Plus combines Analytics, CDP, Experimentation (and soon Session Replay) in one platform. It's one part of our plan to make data cheaper and more scalable over time. It's allows you to pay based on number of Monthly Tracked Users, a much easier to understand and predictable metric, instead of events. It starts off with 300,000 MTUs (3x of our free tier) and gets cheaper per MTU as you scale. Plus includes our Analytics capabilities, CDP, and the feature-flagging and management tools previously only available in Experiment all integrated together. We will be including more here over time including Session Replay later this year. More details on Amplitude's new Plus plan here: amplitude.com/blog/plus-plan I'm very excited for the future of this space as we work on making data cheaper to track over time!
