Duke creates this whiteboard material every big game. They got the 5 star recruits, top 5 picks, alumni in the media shilling for them, & each year are told how great Duke is.
Despite all of it, they paint themselves as this team nobody believes in.
You’re not the underdogs.

From what I’m hearing, Duke has NO CHANCE versus St John’s on Friday. It’s like the 2010 Elite 8 versus Baylor all over again. St John’s is older. They’re more athletic. They’re tougher. They play more physical. They’re healthier.

@YeaDukee @smit73623 @newyorkgrooovee Idk why Duke fans in particular have such a problem with this. No one is saying the Johnnies are favored. No one is saying Duke doesn't stand a chance. When we discuss sports in America we almost always do it in the context of "here's how the underdog may surprise us."

@YeaDukee @smit73623 @newyorkgrooovee Did you want the broadcast to say "Duke poses a threat against Siena." No, that's silly. That phrasing is used for the underdog. Words have meaning. Duke is the favorite so we dont explain why they "pose a threat." There's no shortage of discussion of Duke's strengths.

@kailynschofield I had no problem with trading Sproat in general. I think we overpaid to rent Peralta though. I think Freddy is good and I'm excited to have him, I don't think he's a true ace. And giving up Sproat and Jett is a lot. I hope I'm wrong and Peralta blows me away and stays long term.

@Manach_38 when you have 3 rookie pitchers who are all in line to play significant time, you have to take the risk and let one go sometimes to get a frontline starter. It’s great to have strong prospects that can break camp, but you also have to use them to your advantage in trades imo

@kailynschofield Fair, but I don't consider it prospect hugging when Sproat and Jett were both in line to play significant time in the bigs this year. If Peralta signs an extension that changes things for me a bit, but Stearns has never given out long term deals to pitchers so it seems unlikely.

@smit73623 @newyorkgrooovee Yes because when a team is heavily favored it's pretty rare for the talking points to be about how they may beat their opponent. When we say a team "poses a problem" we are talking about the underdog 99% of the time.
