In the Cave of Thawr, as the Messenger ﷺ rested upon the lap of Sayyidunā Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq, al-Ṣiddīq al-Akbar was bitten by a venemous snake. When we, in our frailty, are stung by nothing more than a bee, we lose ourselves, our voices cry out, our bodies tremble, and we cannot contain the pain. But our Master, Abū Bakr… not a whisper escaped his blessed lips, not a single movement betrayed him, for how could he disturb the sleep of the Beloved ﷺ? We are told that the Ṣaḥābah would give their lives to protect him, and indeed, they would. But their love reached further still: they would give their lives not only to defend him, but simply so he could sleep in peace! This is what love looks like and that is why the Imām of love said: “It became manifest that all obligations are subsidiary; the fundamental principle is servitude of that Crowned One ﷺ.”
