You know what I love about the Last Samurai (2003) starring Tom Cruise and Ken Watanabe? I love that it has broken the brains of a very specific set of people. The movie came out more than 20 years ago and to this day there is a set of insecure Asian Americans (usually of Chinese or Korean descent) that will not shut up about this movie, despite having never actually seen it. The story is about Nathan Algren (Tom Cruise), an alcoholic war veteran who is employed to clear up a rebellion during the Meiji restoration. During a failed skirmish he is captured by Moritsugu Katsumoto (Ken Watanabe) where he is kept as a prisoner for a season where he quickly learns kenjutsu and Japanese, overcomes his alcohol problem, and fights some Ninja for some reason. There’s another battle where Algren teams up with Moritsugu Katsumoto, against the Meiji government where all of the samurai get gunned down and Algren is brought before the emperor to explain what happened and tell the story of The Last Samurai. Algren is not a samurai. He was a witness. You don’t pluralize words in Japanese. The titular ‘last samurai’ are Katsumoto’s group of rebels that made a heroic last stand before the samurai class was abolished. Algren gained a respect for samurai culture and turned his life around in an incredibly short (cinematic) amount of time. But he was never a samurai. Going back to the people whose minds were broken by this film, many of these insecure individuals have a habit of regularly talking about this movie when they see westerners in Asia. It’s always something along the line of, “Look at this guy. He thinks he’s the last samurai.” But that’s pretty much never the case because the people they are referring to have generally seen the movie and know Tom Cruise isn’t The Last Samurai. You guys are going to need to let it go someday. It’s been over 20 years. Take 2 hours out of your day, watch it, hate it, and finally get around to understanding it so you can stop referring to white expats in Asia as “The Last Samurai.” It doesn’t offend us. If anything all it does is make us laugh and point out that you either didn’t watch or didn’t understand the movie. 🤣
