#USAF United States Air Force - Middle East Activity Erbil International Airport, Iraq Since the start of July there have been at least 20 C-17s in/out of Erbil International Airport in Northern Iraq. These have primarily been MOOSE flights, the region Air Mobility Command callsign for U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM). These movements have been noted by several OSINT analysts, including @sentdefender, @DefenseBulletin and @TheIntelFrog. To understand these flights further, we need to consider the Mission Codes. A mission code is a short string sent via ACARS used by AMC to identify, among other things, a mission, the stage and the sequence of that aircraft in the mission. Mission Codes are something I typically don't include in my posts, although they are publicly available. This post will be an exception. ACARS data collected from @thebaldgeek tbg.airframes.io. Flights between 1st/23rd July Between 1st-23rd July there were 10 C-17s in/out of Erbil. Of those, 7 were in the "move" phase when arriving in Iraq, and switched to "depositioning" when departing. This suggests they had dropped something off in Iraq. All 10 were MOOSE flights, and all but one originated from King Hussein International Airport in Jordan. A single flight, MOOSE 87, came from Muwaffaq Salti Air Base. Also during this period there were three flights whose origins were Erbil, meaning they arrived as positioning flights. Since 23rd July In the past week there have been another 10 C-17s into Erbil, all again being MOOSE flights. They are all positioning flights, with three having now departed to Muwaffaq Salti in Jordan and switching to "mission move". Royal Air Force Activity There are two RAF Atlas C.1s currently based at RAF Akrotiri that have been running shuttles between various Middle Eastern airports, including Erbil, with high-priority callsigns (ASCOT 99xx). ZM408 and ZM410 have been flying between Akrotiri and Erbil as ASCOT 9949 a total of 6 times since the 14th of July. Summary With the exception of two REACH flights, all these logged flights are Air Force-coded. Up until the 23rd of July, the trend was primarily moving supplies and/or equipment INTO Erbil, and since the 24th of July it has been exclusively moving OUT of Erbil. This data is all collected from ACARS. There is not much ADS-B/Mode-S data on these flights, and the ones that do are lost somewhere East of Muwaffaq Salti in Jordan before entering Iraq. What is actually being moved here is obviously difficult to say. This is purely an analysis of open-source, public flight tracking data that we have access to. It does appear that throughout July there has been an Air Bridge between Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan, and Erbil International Airport in Iraq. For comparison, my previous flight tracking for Operation Epic Fury only saw two REACH flights into Erbil between January and March. Although I wasn't tracking MOOSE flights, looking at @thebaldgeek's site, there were only three MOOSE flights into Erbil in June. @MATA_osint @DefenceGeek @TheIntelFrog @sentdefender @Osinttechnical @vcdgf555
