@DrMattThomas1 I hated obs anaesthesia as a reg. Most likely because it was 100% obs, day and night for months, in the region I trained. I rather enjoy it now as a boss.

@MusiclyGiftedYo @ChrisSy49768465 @SpliceEye @Sorrelish @JacksonEflin @JayHulmePoet @stringlytyped Yep, random safety check. Frequently they’ll also check your indicators and brake lights are also working. You’ll get a fine if they aren’t (and not allowed to drive off if your tyres are bald).
English

@ChrisSy49768465 @MaplesonF @SpliceEye @Sorrelish @JacksonEflin @JayHulmePoet @stringlytyped Oh! Don’t most people know not to drive with bald tires? That was one thing that not only my dad, but also my behind the wheel teacher drilled into me. That and how to change a tire.
English

@TiaraNFreeman @Sorrelish @JacksonEflin @JayHulmePoet @stringlytyped Pretty much fully automatic. I’ve only had one speeding ticket in the UK and that was a camera. Fine arrived in the post a couple of weeks later. Of note, I drove for 20 years in the UK and was pulled over once in that time.
English

@Sorrelish @JacksonEflin @JayHulmePoet @stringlytyped Oh wow so it’s the people watching the cameras that ticket? Or it’s automatic? Sorry if this too many questions, I’m just curious

@ACTINOSProject I was in the UK working a summer job after my first year of medical school - data collection at my local hospital. Was walking the wards that afternoon getting data, every TV was on BBC1 which had rolling footage. Saw the second plane hit on live TV.

@OrthopodReg @Bunnings You’re not truly Aussie until you’ve argued about the onions! 🤣🧅🌭
English

@GongGasGirl Similar numbers to the main tertiary centre where I trained. 100 ICU beds. Just stupidly large. I decided early on I didn’t want a boss job there - impossible to really get to know people.
English

@GongGasGirl It terrified me when I realised that our F1s this year were all born in 2000
English

@OrthopodReg Yep. I salary sacrifice my mortgage. Every little helps!

There’s more ways of improving pay
Specific tax or salary sacrifice allowances for #healthcare
experienced it 10 years ago in QLD & now in NSW
I increase my take home by reducing my taxable income
I spend approx $9k a year on rent/debt/life *before* tax happens

Have asked if I can have leave for the joint QLD and NSW #handsurgery Conference
The venue is…acceptable

@miriamkirkp @GMB Currently living in Australia. Have family in the UK. My cost of living is lower than my UK family.
English

@GMB Look at the cost of living in Australia compared to the UK. Of course, they pay more.
English

@Raulmac04 @Jo_McGinn @GMB I am not aware of any English speaking country that pays as little as the UK at present. Maybe some of the Caribbean islands?
English

@Jo_McGinn @GMB Are they the only English speaking countries with equivalent healthcare or are they the only English speaking countries with equivalent healthcare that have higher starting salaries?
English

@rabdon1964 @GMB I did. Pay is better, hours are better, weather is better, cost of living is less. Your loss is Australia’s gain.
English

@K_G_Spearpoint @OrthopodReg @parthaskar @RoshanaMN @trentconsultant @TheBMA @RobLaurensonD4P Much of a muchness. It used to be more expensive here, but the UK has rapidly caught up and then taken over. So now cost of living is slightly cheaper, overall, in Oz.

Today’s “NHS must change” chat
I get paid fortnightly
just received my first Sydney pay
It’s more (if you extrapolate to a month) than a 🇬🇧 7 year, 12 PA consultant would earn
The greatest resource in healthcare is the staff
Pay them or lose them

@ERunswickBMA I emigrated in 2019. People occasionally ask if I’ll go back to the UK. The laughter and rapid “No!” is answer enough.

Pay them or lose them.
Dr Mapleson F@MaplesonF
@OrthopodReg @parthaskar @RoshanaMN @trentconsultant @TheBMA @RobLaurensonD4P The fortnightly pay is just exponentially better. So good. And yes, my pay as a public anaesthetic consultant (aka no private work) is double that of a UK one.
English

@bobfunn 😆😆 We’ve got one (1) Aisys. Registrars be like “What are these volatile anaesthetics with actual vapourisers and analogue dials?!”
