The future of the Constitution is bright because liberty is the enduring thread that connects America’s past to its future. At its core, the Constitution places the individual—not the state—at the center of our republic. Government exists to serve the people, not the other way around. As our nation evolves, we should remain vigilant in ensuring that the Constitution continues to protect individual liberty with the same strength and clarity envisioned by the Founders. When new institutions or practices concentrate power beyond meaningful democratic accountability, it is appropriate to ask whether they remain faithful to the Constitution’s design. Today, many Americans are concerned about the growth of the administrative state and the increasing influence of unelected regulatory agencies. They argue that broad delegations of authority from Congress to executive agencies can diminish accountability and distance important decisions from the citizens those decisions affect. From this perspective, restoring greater responsibility to Congress would strengthen constitutional government and reinforce the principle that laws should be made by the people’s elected representatives. Much of the modern administrative system expanded during the New Deal era, fundamentally changing the relationship between the federal government and the American people. Whether one views that transformation as necessary or excessive, it is fair to ask whether the current balance of power remains consistent with the Constitution’s original commitment to limited government, separated powers, and individual liberty. The Constitution has endured for nearly two and a half centuries because its central promise remains timeless: free people govern themselves. Preserving that promise requires continual vigilance to ensure that power remains accountable, liberty remains protected, and government remains the servant of the people—not their master.

Our Founders designed a system in which most everyday issues affecting people’s lives would be addressed closest to the people—by states and local communities. They rejected the idea of concentrating too much authority in a distant central government, believing that decisions are often best made by those who understand local needs. Their goal was to preserve liberty, encourage accountability, and avoid the inefficiency that can accompany an overly centralized bureaucracy. In this vision, government works best when it is limited, responsive, and close to the people.

At the most fundamental level, our Founders feared unchecked government power above all else. They designed America’s system of checks and balances with extraordinary precision—creating a framework that both restrains power and enables decisive action.

Today has special meaning for me and my family. On 9/11 my younger brother Gary was murdered by Jihadists simply for being American. He went to work that beautiful Tuesday morning pursuing the American dream. To succeed, and build his life in the greatest country on earth. Jealousy begets hatred and he was killed along with 657 other Cantor Fitzgerald employees for being American and working in the globally famous twin towers of the World Trade Center. America deserves to be loved, she deserves to be protected and she deserves our appreciation because America is the world’s shining light. Imagine a world without America, it becomes very dark very quickly. America is the beacon of freedom beaming across the globe. This is who we are, and why we take the actions we do.
