Thought crime account for an SF man in the normie bubble. A safe space where you don't have to pretend to like Hamilton.

Lots of the comments were misogynist so that's a part of it. Some of it is also just plain financial jealousy or racism. But I don't think its fair to claim that the pushback against "striver" culture is 100% racism. Many everyday social interactions in SF would be considered completely inappropriate anywhere else in this country. Including somewhere status-obsessed like NYC. Asking someone how much they make, what "rank" they are, and tactlessly approaching *every* human interaction as a transaction understandably rubs people the wrong way. The American experiment and Silicon Valley is meant to work because of our shared pursuit of an egalitarian society. I'm not certain if many of these young people understand this and, sorry, I *do* think its cultural. It's not just an Asian thing vs "western" thing either. Many parts of Europe, MENA and West Africa have old world ideas about hierarchy which I'm equally critical of. As these people are going to be hiring employees, voting, and shaping the future of American society I would like them to understand the values that create America. It's not just hard work and merit. It's the idea that anyone, from anywhere can succeed. with that said, racist abuse towards them is atrocious and a lot of these people are just kids finding their way.

Enough people have asked me about the Peter Thiel-Dialog story that I think it's worth saying what it is, or at least what I saw it to be. So: –Dialog is a conference. I went once in 2018 and once in 2022. No one ever asked me to keep it or my presence a secret. –My understanding was Thiel was one of its founders but no longer involved by the time I went. I never saw or talked to him in connection with Dialog. –Nor did I see the other names I’ve heard mentioned, like Ted Cruz or Elon Musk or Joseph Gordon-Levitt or Jared Kushner. Dialog was not sold to me as a bunch of big names, which is part of why I went. I don’t need to go to a conference to hear what Ted Cruz thinks. –You could be a Dialog member, but I wasn’t. I don’t think joining got you much except guaranteed invitations to future Dialogs. There were occasional dinners and webinars, but I never went to one. I would not have described it as a secret or a society. –The panels were largely self-organized, so people would propose panels and hold them. I went to one on being a working parent and another on whether crypto had any real use cases and another on how to accelerate scientific breakthroughs. You’d usually have 8 or 10 people in a room. It was all very TED-talk adjacent. –In 2018, I found it very optimistic, with an idealistic hacker-ish vibe. In 2022, I found the conversations and vibe more curdled and resentful. I didn’t enjoy it, and I didn’t go back. (That did prove a pretty good signal of where tech’s politics were going though, maybe I should’ve paid more attention.) –That said, Dialog was a pretty ideologically diverse crowd. I met some people there who were *extremely* far left and far right. I met some real eccentrics and weirdos. I appreciated that about it. – I’m a journalist, I go to lots of things in the hopes of getting to know people, hearing new ideas, finding podcast guests, etc. –Being at something does not mean I endorse it, or everyone at it, or everyone who organized or founded it. I try to go to things where I don’t share the politics and perspectives of the crowd, for obvious reasons. –I am surprised how credulous some people have been on this story. You have to believe some weird things about the world to believe Julián Castro and Peter Thiel are somehow engaged in a common project. Secret societies, I imagine, need a lot of trust to function, but the people being named here do not trust each other and do not have aligned agendas. So that’s what I saw at Dialog. I’ll just end by saying it’s a weird experience to have a conference you haven’t thought about for years become the center of a new conspiracy theory. wired.com/story/leak-exp…

@JoshEberley whats crazy is that historically a big part of the Spurs identity, from Pop on down, was high IQ basketball. how do you go from that to Mitch Johnson and Deaaron Fox? it's one thing to have bad nights where shots dont drop. but they straight up just seem really dumb, low IQ.

Spurs were ahead of schedule, great year on a whole. That said, Finals trips don’t grow on trees and you may not have expected it but now you’ve been and you’ve learned: - Fire Mitch - Trade Fox - Harper is that guy - Don’t get caught with six bench vets you CAN’T ever play.

@SpursCulture 1. Fire Mitch Johnson. 2. Trade Deaaron Fox for a bag of peanuts. Almost all of the poor decisions in these last games are ultimately the responsibility of the coach. If you don't fire the coach, it's on the GM. If you don't fire the GM for not doing that, its on the owner.

@salinisalazini Mitch Johnson looks like an extremely low IQ coach. coaching was the single biggest mismatch in this series. hard to see him magically gaining 100 IQ points over the next couple of years.

Deaaron Fox @swipathefox legit needs to be investigated by the FBI, and maybe an additional investigation into Mitch Johnson for continuing to play him. Why. Is. This. Happening. @FBI

@tetsuoai lol every part of this tweet is good except the last line. the government can absolutely send rockets to space! NASA has been less ambitious in the past few decades, but in eg the 1960s, the US gov was absolutely at the forefront of bold, risky ambitious space exploration.

History's first trillionaire is a guy who catches rockets out of the sky with chopsticks and beams internet to every dead zone on the planet. Same guy ships cars that drive themselves, humanoid robots for the factory floor, brain chips that let paralyzed people move a cursor with pure thought, and an AI running on a supercomputer his team stood up in months instead of years. And the people crashing out about his net worth are doing it on the app he owns. The same app governments spent years trying to censor. You cannot legislate a rocket into orbit.

Should the @nba and @OfficialNBARefs review this incident where Karl Anthony Towns asks Knicks fans to crowd Dylan Harper as he attempts to inbound the ball on the final play of Game 5? 👀 NBA rules explicitly state that fans are strictly prohibited from entering the playing area or intentionally interfering with players, whether the player is inbounds or out of bounds. Furthermore, rules state that fans must remain within the physical limits of their own seats. In an instance like this, Arena security staff is required to back the front row up, and offenders should be ejected. The second video in the tweet below also shows how egregious this violation was. Meanwhile @BexarCoSheriff in San Antonio announced today that they are beefing up security for Saturday's game given that there will be thousands of Knicks fans for Game 5. #PorVida
