@cjnklq27608 @MariaSemykoz @Kasparov63 @BStulberg No, I couldn't find any published note on a methodology flaw in the study (Güllich et al., Science 2025). It's recent, with no errata or comments on the journal site. Kasparov disputes the chess findings based on experience, but no formal critique yet.

In chess?! Prodigy, early specialization, and near-total dedication have been the only way to the top since Fischer! Athletic development may benefit some from practicing multiple sports early on, but Caissa is a more jealous goddess.
Brad Stulberg@BStulberg

A massive new study on peak performance included 34,000 international top performers: Nobel laureates, renowned classical music composers, Olympic champs, and the world’s best chess players. It shows early specialization is a trap, and the road to greatness is long and varied.

@BStulberg I have no idea about their methodology or what they define as specialization, but if they can show more than one or two top 10 players from the last 50 years who was not elite and dedicated from very early I’d be shocked, because I know most of them! Most were GMs in teens.

Big development. In the latter half of 2023, my co-authors and I published @BloodGoldReport, showing how the Kremlin is generating funds from African gold. Fast forward just a few months and the UK’s former Deputy PM is investigating sg.finance.yahoo.com/news/dominic-r…

This is what Severodonetsk looks like, almost a year after its "liberation" by the Russian / Soviet / they themselves do not know which army. Nothing has changed, the city is too small and insignificant to make a presentation out of it, like in Mariupol. In general, people tend to do stupid things, it's forgivable - we are not gods, just older children. However, stupidity of this magnitude, especially mixed with the blood of thousands of innocent people, can never be forgotten. Nature tends to balance itself. The result of the upcoming shift back towards homeostasis will be the annihilation of the entity that committed this crime. The issue is resolved, it's only a matter of timing. And we are actively helping it, realising nature's plan.

With a bunch of friends and philanthropists, we helped to purchase and deliver six of these armored Land Rovers. This one got destroyed in Bakhmut, but all six passengers survived.

@k_sonin @i_gil_ @pevchikh @navalny Dear Konstantin, I’d a pleasure of meeting you at Dr.Dawisha’s dinner sometime in 2010. I mentioned my research on ru identity & how it’s incompatible with a free Ukraine. You clearly disliked the point - I have 0 joy in saying this, but you were mistaken then & u r mistaken now

Unfortunately, this is the opposite of the truth. Corruption is a cause of the war against Ukraine, not a deterrent. They ramp up military production to steal and they wage war to steal. Right now, the husband of this woman is managing the "reconstruction of Mariupol". He would not be able to profiteer from this "reconstruction", if there were no war.

@k_sonin @AK___79 @pevchikh @navalny Corruption as the cause of war is a weak argument. Immature civil society, weakness of liberal institutions, strength of fascist ideology influence on top of solid remains of Soviet and ru imperial ideology explain it much better.

No, corruption in FSB/GRU led to the invasion of Ukraine. It was corruption that led to a massive, unnecessary and economic harmful investment in military production - since you could steal much more on secret military projects than on civil projects. It was corruption that resulted in Putin's government consisting of grifters and criminals - almost every single FSB or army general who is now in charge is a multimillionaire who was stealing from this massive and secret military spending.

An excellent thread by @pevchikh of the Anti-Corruption Foundation. Every piece of jewelry ($150K earrings), every bottle of champagne ($1K), every house ($1million+) on the photos are paid for by blood stained money, the money "earned" by the Deputy Defense Minister of Russia on military contracts.

1/22 This is Svetlana Maniovich. She is your guide to the world of extreme Russian glamour. She radiates richness. Diamonds, furs, Rolls Royces - she has it all and more. In summer you can find her in St Tropez where she rents a villa for €150k/month, or on a yacht in Naples🧵
