With extraordinary colleagues, we are developing new architectures for neutral-atom quantum processors that dramatically reduce the resource estimates for fault-tolerant quantum computing. This progress makes me optimistic that broadly useful quantum computing will soon be a reality. We’ll continue fundamental research @Caltech to advance quantum science and technology, while building fault-tolerant quantum machines and exploring their applications @TeamOratomic. It’s a very exciting time to be a quantum scientist! caltech.edu/about/news/cal…

Don Knuth! Ok, starting to get surreal “Shock! Shock! I learned yesterday that an open problem I’d been working on for several weeks had just been solved by Claude Opus 4.6 — Anthropic’s hybrid reasoning model that had been released three weeks earlier! It seems that I’ll have to revise my opinions about “generative AI” one of these days. What a joy it is to learn not only that my conjecture has a nice solution but also to celebrate this dramatic advance in automatic deduction and creative problem solving. I’ll try to tell the story briefly in this note.” www-cs-faculty.stanford.edu/~knuth/papers/…

The Simons Foundation has put their treasure trove of videos on YouTube (they’ve been available for a decade from the Simons website, but I kept begging them to move it to a platform with many more eyeballs…). Here’s Eli Stein interviewed by Charlie Fefferman: youtube.com/watch?v=pWOU-c… And Rutgers’s @RutgersU own Endre Szemeredi (interviewed by Avi Wigderson): youtube.com/watch?v=_ZQ4aB… And Ron Graham (here talking about Math+AI, from a decade ago): youtube.com/watch?v=fHrply… And lots of Gromov, e.g.: youtube.com/watch?v=aI2ASq… Sorry for wasting the next few hours of your life, but it will have been well worth it to watch these!!

Are the dynamics of disordered quantum systems easier to simulate? --> Yes, because entanglement spreads slowly for a non-perturbatively long time (a.k.a. "prethermal MBL") in any dimension. arxiv.org/pdf/2510.11831 Thanks to my collaborators Ben McDonough and Andy Lucas!

New preprint with Nick Hunter-Jones arxiv.org/pdf/2509.22438 Is a typical translation-invariant Hamiltonian gapped or gapless? --> We prove that for random rank-1 interactions on a bounded-degree graph, the Hamiltonian is *gapped* with high probability at large local dim.

Horng-Tzer Yau has spent decades studying the interplay of randomness and order in matrices. In 2008, Jun Yin, a former physicist, joined Yau’s group. In spring of 2024, the pair made the biggest advance on the problem since the 1980s. quantamagazine.org/new-physics-in…

🔥 @GoogleDeepMind just dropped their "formal conjectures" project - formalizing statements of math's biggest unsolved mysteries in #LeanLang and #Mathlib! This Google-backed project is a HUGE step toward developing "a much richer dataset of formalized conjectures", valuable for benchmarks and growing the Lean ecosystem. The project was open sourced today! And you can be part of it! Check it out: github.com/google-deepmin… #LeanProver #FormalMath #AIResearch #GoogleDeepMind

Until recently, we thought that transporting a macroscopic cloud of particles a distance r in time t is suppressed by the usual LR-type light cone exp(vt-r) Turns out, the decay rate is proportional to the number of transported particles N exp(N(vt-r)) arxiv.org/abs/2503.19788

Uhlmann's theorem states that the fidelity of two states rho and sigma can be expressed in terms of their purifications (where the fidelity simplifies). In arxiv.org/abs/2502.01749 we (with @giulia_qp and Renato Renner) generalize Uhlmann's theorem to Rényi relative entropies.
