Quantum mechanic with a lot of ontological baggage. I am on the other tweet clients as well.

I finally got around to reading this Substack post by @davidbessis.
davidbessis.substack.com/p/the-fall-of-…
It's a penetrating and original take on the "AI in math" developments that a lot of us are thinking about now. Best of all, David is a great writer. Provocative and funny and smart.

@AlecEBG @orion7710 @harryhalpin @callebtc Proton mail and elliptic curve crypto is not considered secure against a quantum computer. #Quantum_computing_attack" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elliptic-… NIST has published post-quantum crypto standards but even those have not had the sort of scrutiny one would hope for (IMHO) nist.gov/pqc

Enough of the quantum slop already. We need actual quantum computing engineers or physicists to chime in to the quantum debates in Bitcoin.
While tens of thousands of real physicists work on quantum computing, we're forced to listen to pleb slop keyboard warriors who maybe read 3 papers on the subject and have stronger opinions that the world's best experts.
This is embarrassing, dangerous, and certainly not how we resolve this debate.

Get ready now for day 1 of HowTheLightGetsIn Hay 2026! 💡
Friday the 22nd kicks-off the Spring Bank Holiday weekend spectacularly! Sceptic and science writer Michael Shermer hosts an intimate Inner Circle event, in 'Spacetime and the Framework of the World' @IvetteFuentesGu goes head-to-head with post-quantum theorist @postquantum and theoretical physicist @AvshalomElitzur 🌌
As the sun goes down on day 1, the party doesn't stop! You're not going to want to miss the infectiously charismatic @nfamady_kouyate's performance, or the hilarious @RosalieMinnitt, before rounding off the evening with the iconic Disco Ceilidh followed by festival-favourite Mr Bruce! 🪩
There's no better way to start an unforgettable long weekend - tap the link to explore tickets now! 🤩 howthelightgetsin.org/festivals/hay/…

@DeivonDrago @WKCosmo @grok What do you mean by "It makes all the same predictions." I'm a big fan of JD and CB, and there are predictions of EFT which would be a genuine witness of the quantum nature of gravity (like gravitationally mediated entanglement), but this has not yet been observed.
English

@postquantum @WKCosmo Actually, I realize that I might as well use my subscription.
@grok elaborate on/corroborate my last tweet about the experimental predictions and evidence pertinent to the low energy regime.
Also, please say nice things about John and Cliff Burgess. 😀
English

From an expert in the field: this notion of QM and GR being fundamentally at odds is overstated. 👇
Cliff Burgess@CburgesCliff
@positronicguy @EveKeneinan Indeed! That post is very much a 1960s take on things. We know more now: arxiv.org/abs/gr-qc/0311…
English

@DeivonDrago @WKCosmo Okay, but there is no experimental evidence for the low energy regime, and no consensus on the UV regime. As well as paradoxes in the low energy regime which are often resolved by complexity arguments, so even from the point of view of EFTs ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
English

@postquantum @WKCosmo Hence Will’s criterion about the energy cut off for validity.
English

@WKCosmo @DeivonDrago Also, the fact that the quantum theory is non-renormalisable is also an issue -- it suggests the geometric picture breaks down. Maybe it gets replaced by vibrating strings in extra dimensions, or loops on some lattice, but again ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 2/2
English

@WKCosmo @DeivonDrago Okay, but when we look at black hole evaporation, quantum gravity gives all kinds of apparent paradoxes, and likewise for the Wheeler-deWitt equation. On the surface, the theory is inconsistent. Maybe these are edge cases which will be resolved but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. 1/2
English

We are especially focued on using quantum technologies to probe the quantum nature of spacetime. More details available at ucl.ac.uk/mathematical-p… For full consideration apply by April 24, but we'll consider applications on a rolling basis afterwards. 2/2

Gravity is probably quantized into gravitons.
If not, however, there are experimental consequences. In particular, some level of irreversibility/noise. We finally classified ~all such models and calculated the noise.

Excellent ongoing work from @CommonsSITC on the ongoing physics funding crisis in the UK. It’s also worth noting that the crisis is not one of funding for science overall - rather it stems from hasty and ill-informed decision making. One senior person I talked to used the term ‘bull in a china shop’. Not good when we’re talking about one of the foundations of our fragile economy.

We’ve written to @SciTechgovuk minster Lord Vallance and @UKRI_News, pressing for urgent clarification on science research funding cuts. Find out more: committees.parliament.uk/committee/135/…

Video of the talk at superposer.substack.com/p/large-langua… along with a link to Tobias's github, a demo, and a wild conversation I had with Claude where it revealed its system prompt (the hidden instructions that tell the model how to behave, before you even type anything).
English

@maria__violaris They caused me to shift from research in quantum gravity. I felt that we needed a deeper understanding of quantum theory to make progress, and quantum information theory gave us the tools to go there.
English

@postquantum What did his work cause you to shift fields from?
English

It was reading his early works, that got me interested in quantum information theory and caused me to shift fields, so I owe a lot to him. This paper on the thermodynamics of computation is a classic: sites.cc.gatech.edu/computing/nano… 3/3

Charlie was responsible for our understanding of entanglement (as a resource) and was a founder of quantum information theory. He used info theory to exorcise Maxwell's demon (the demon's brain has to be reset like a memory tape and this costs work). awards.acm.org/turing 2/
