@Tom_Hingley @wt_analysis I do vaguely recall seeing a goalkeeper (Tim Howard maybe?) do just this on a longer-range indirect kick that had been shot straight on goal. He saw that it hadn't been touched, let it fly into the net, and then just picked it out for a goal kick.

@Tom_Hingley @wt_analysis Right—it's highly unlikely a defender would have the foresight (or knowledge of the laws) to just step aside, especially when it's fired from such close distance.

Anybody who knows the rules of the game - are you allowed to just smash it from an indirect free kick toward the goal knowing it's going to get a deflection? Can't for the life of me work out why #WWFC would lay the ball off 6 yards out to just get charged down by #ITFC.

@SecorWill @wt_analysis No, any player. This is why the referee raises his arm. He keeps it up in the air until it is touched by another player (of either team). Once it is down, the ball can enter the goal legally.

@wt_analysis So yes, you could just smash it and hope it hits a defender. But the smart defenders could also just get out of the way. If it enters the goal directly, result is a goal kick.

@wt_analysis Indirect free kick means it can't go directly into the goal from the first touch—must touch another player first.

@cmclymer Thank you for your service. You most certainly earned the right to be respected. Having said that, I’m voting for Trump because he has better skills and experience to run the largest economy in the world.

@DocCrom I saw this in the theater when it came out, with two friends. One friend was fascinated by the mind-bending plot, the other laughed most of the way through. Me, I was terrified to my core.

@mcmansionhell Stared at this out my office window for years. “Worldwide Plaza,” 8th Ave and 50th St., Manhattan. It’s not really sure what it wants to be. (Also, don’t walk under that crane!)
