As a 7th-generation farm family, agriculture isn’t just what I do- it’s who I am & what I believe. I’m running for US Senate to stand up for MN farmers & rural communities, fight for the future of American agriculture & our way of life 🌾🇺🇸 🧑🏻‍🌾 🚜#NationalAgricultureDay #MNSen

We've lost 150 acres of farmland to solar panels. I don't think we should be covering prime farmland with solar panels when there are plenty of other places to put them (rooftops, over parking lots, deserts, etc.). What do you think? #MNSen #Farming #BuildBabyBuild

🚨 🏅Medal of Honor alert: a couple of months ago, my good friend and White House Fellows classmate, Army Major Nick Dockery received approval from Congress to be awarded the Medal of Honor. All that awaits is the President’s signature. As a Special Forces officer, Nick put himself in front of grenades, enemy fire and more to protect his comrades. His degree of selfless bravery is fully worthy of this honor. But I also know him as a kind, irreverently funny, deeply honest, and thought provoking friend who will move heaven and earth to take care of those around him. He’s a true American hero. Congratulations, Nick! spartz.house.gov/media/press-re…

Copper is a necessary component of modern life, used in everything from cellphones to military aircraft and defense systems. My Congressional Review Act resolution is a major step toward reducing our dependence on China for our critical minerals.

Great news: President Trump just signed @PeteStauber's bill to remove Biden's 20-year ban on mining in the Superior National Forest. This opens the way for economic revival in Northern Minnesota, and mineral production that could feed the industries of the future here in Minnesota, including battery production, drones and more. I've been all over northern Minnesota, and this is a step that the locals emphatically support. Crucially, this is just the first step, and these mines can only open if they can prove that they will not pollute the soils or waters of Northern Minnesota. The @EPA's engineers must approve the mine plans by ensuring that even under extreme circumstances such as a natural disaster, no pollution will enter the environment. The EPA's permitting engineers can determine this much better than politicians or implacable political activists. We can't let our economic future be held hostage by activists who peddle scare tactics and will never be satisfied. Norway went through this same process: they made it impossible to open mines and imported minerals from other countries which did not mine in an environmentally-responsible way. They eventually decided that it's better to produce those minerals at home, where they can do it in an environmentally-sound way. Minnesota workers powered America's 19th and 20th centuries, and with common sense regulation, we can build the industries that power the 21st. This is a huge step in that direction. wdio.com/front-page/top… #MNSen #BuildBabyBuild

What will AI do to jobs? For better or worse, human desires are infinite, so there will still be jobs. And the jobs will mostly be in things that AI is not good at. And foremost among them are jobs that involve relationships (I’d argue skilled trades are also safe for a while). We are implementing AI as much as possible in our campaign. But AI cannot build relationships. We use AI for the non-relationship tasks so that we can focus on meeting people. #BuildBabyBuild #MNSen #AI #Optimism
Alex Imas@alexolegimas

New essay on the economics of structural change and the post-commodity future of work. 1. Almost any question about the impact of advanced AI on the economy needs to start at the same place: what is still scarce? Answer that, and the analysis becomes pretty straightforward. This essay explores what becomes scarce if AI really can replicate most of what humans do in production, and what this mean for the future of jobs. 2. My conjecture, working through the economics: labor reallocates across sectors, and the sector it reallocates to has properties that keep labor a meaningful share of the economy. Ultimately this is about the structure of demand itself. For this, we have to go back to Girard, Augustine and Rousseau: once people's base needs are met, their preferences shift to comparative motives (e.g., status, exclusivity, social desirability). This motive is inherently non-satiated. 4. The key paper is Comin, Lashkari, and Mestieri (Econometrica 2021). As people get richer, they don't buy proportionally more of everything. They shift spending toward sectors with higher income elasticity. They estimate income effects account for 75%+ of observed structural change. 5. The ironic consequence: the sector that gets automated becomes a smaller share of the economy, not a larger one. Agriculture got massively more productive and its share of employment collapsed. Manufacturing too. The "stagnant" sectors absorb the spending and the jobs. 6. So the question is: which sectors have high income elasticity in a post-AGI world? I argue it's what I call the relational sector. Categories where the human isn't just an input into production, it is part of the value. 7. Why does the relational sector have high income elasticity? Because human desire has a mimetic, relational dimension. We don't just want things for their intrinsic properties. We want what others want, and we want it more when others can't have it. Girard, Rousseau, Augustine, and Hobbes all saw this. 8. In work with Kristóf Madarász, we showed this experimentally: WTP roughly doubles when a random subset of others is excluded from the good. And in new work with Graelin Mandel, AI involvement kills the premium. Human-made art gains 44% from exclusivity; AI-made art only 21%. 9. This all comes together for the core argument. The sector that absorbs spending as AI makes commodity production cheap is one where human provenance is part of the value, and demand for it grows faster than income. Exactly the profile that keeps labor meaningful. 10. To be clear about the claim: I'm NOT saying aggregate labor share must rise. It may fall. The claim is about sectoral composition, i.e., where expenditure and employment go once commodities get cheap, and the fact that the sector that will absorb reallocated labor maps to a substantial component of human preferences and desire. 11. If you're interested in the formal model, a linked companion technical note works out all the economics. Read the essay here: aleximas.substack.com/p/what-will-be…

🚨🚨🚨 Big news: We placed third in the @MNCD4GOP (MN's 4th Congressional District) straw poll in St. Paul yesterday! We are clearly in the lead pack in the biggest poll of delegates so far, as we vie to be THE grassroots campaign for the US Senate. After all, who knows more about grassroots than a farmer? 🚜 Schwarze: 66 Tafoya: 47 York: 18 White: 6 Gruenhagen: 5 Weiler: 3 Hann: 0 This is a huge burst of momentum vs. last month when we were notching just a few percent. Our message of making it easy to build, cutting red tape to make life affordable, and using tech to prevent fraud is catching fire across rural AND urban Minnesota 🔥 We now have hundreds of volunteers, we're getting featured in major media, and we plan to build on this momentum to WIN the endorsement on May 29th. We're catching fire, but we can't do it without you. Please join our team of volunteers or donate at yorkform.com, and let's make Minnesota the land of opportunity again! #BuildBabyBuild #MNSen #SendAFarmerWashington
