We have been told for 100 years that alkyl groups are inductively electron-donating when compared to hydrogen. We present evidence that they are really electron-withdrawing, and discuss what this means With @dr_benward, @Peter_J_Knowles, Colan Hughes pubs.rsc.org/en/content/art…

@aran_nayebi @isciverse As someone who has been in academia for 30 years, I see your point but I disagree. Yes, you do need to be passionate about your subject, but you also need to have capacity to do the work in a reasonable amount of time.

@captgouda24 @isciverse We have targets, set objectives and performance review every year. But there also needs to be academic freedom to explore the questions that we believe are important. This isn’t a personal thing. If we have a small number of managers setting the research agenda…..

@73935860Ae @LocasaleLab Are you being serious? Just because we are passionate about our subject doesn’t mean we should be taken advantage of. We don’t take vows of poverty in order to become scientists. Talent and hard work should be rewarded

This article is the embodiment of a broken academy drained of meaning. One item in the queue is an article discussing what woke science is. This piece is a great exhibit. Academia is recast as just a job, the passion is pathologized, and the vocation is treated as a psychological hazard rather than the reason the enterprise ever worked at all. There is no point in enduring low pay and years of delayed life if the work is not a calling. Once that premise was abandoned - once working hard at something you love was framed as toxic, and excellence itself became suspect - the rot was inevitable. What replaced it was a culture of mediocrity: lowered expectations, therapeutic language standing in for standards, and institutions more concerned with emotional perceptions than truth.
Science News@SciencNews

Academia isn't a calling—it's a job. Stop glorifying burnout. Clock in, do great work, clock out. Your worth isn't measured in unpaid overtime

Smartphone addiction has negative impacts on student learning and overall academic performance.

The greater the use of a phone while studying, the greater the negative impact on learning.

The skills and cognitive abilities students needed for academic success are negatively affected by excessive phone use.

The results of this meta-analysis implied that addicted users show a diminished level in learning.

I live in Wales and today received my Join Us letter from Reform UK, complete with SAE which I posted back to them, immediately, empty. If every other person in Wales did this, Reform would spend over £1.5 million on postage. Not sorry. Join me Cymru.

It's time to remove laptops from classrooms. 24 experiments: Students learn more and get better grades after taking notes by hand than typing. It's not just because they're less distracted—writing enables deeper processing and more images. The pen is mightier than the keyboard.

In our latest paper, we find that different alkyl groups do not have different 'purely inductive' effects, and that differences in their electron-withdrawing/donating ability must be attributed to hyperconjugation/polarizability. pubs.rsc.org/en/content/art…

I was asked what America and Princeton University mean to me. With the University’s help we made a very short video, where I talk about Princeton and why all of our academic enterprises are so important to the US and to the world. As you can see, this is very personal for me. If you feel as strongly as I do, please join me and and the community of Princeton alumni, students, faculty, staff and friends who are committed to making the case for America’s colleges and universities: standup.princeton.edu I believe that all scientists truly care about making our society better for everyone. We are not “the elite,” if anything, we are the working class of society. We are not the people at the top of the mountain looking down, we are the people at the bottom of the mountain trying to help everyone else get to the top. To my mind there is no more noble profession than being a scientist and an educator.

@Halfords_uk the web site for my local auto centre says it is open on Monday at 8am. If I search ‘bank holiday opening hours’ on your site it tells me to look at the page for the relevant store. Guess what. It isn’t open!
