@aran_nayebi @isciverse As someone who has been in academia for 30 years, I see your point but I disagree. Yes, you do need to be passionate about your subject, but you also need to have capacity to do the work in a reasonable amount of time.

This is unequivocally bad advice. Academia is the worst "job" one can have, if viewed solely in those terms. There are plenty of better paying jobs out there for the same skillset. You have to love what you do in academia for it to be worth it!

If academia is just a job, then there shouldn’t be academic freedom. Instead, there must be performance reviews, tasks, and direction. If people are not intrinsically motivated, then they must be extrinsically motivated.

@LocasaleLab Academia should only belong to abundant people, those who have enough financial support, and free time where they have nothing to do but investigating their own interested topics.

This article is the embodiment of a broken academy drained of meaning. One item in the queue is an article discussing what woke science is. This piece is a great exhibit. Academia is recast as just a job, the passion is pathologized, and the vocation is treated as a psychological hazard rather than the reason the enterprise ever worked at all. There is no point in enduring low pay and years of delayed life if the work is not a calling. Once that premise was abandoned - once working hard at something you love was framed as toxic, and excellence itself became suspect - the rot was inevitable. What replaced it was a culture of mediocrity: lowered expectations, therapeutic language standing in for standards, and institutions more concerned with emotional perceptions than truth.

@Halfords_uk the web site for my local auto centre says it is open on Monday at 8am. If I search ‘bank holiday opening hours’ on your site it tells me to look at the page for the relevant store. Guess what. It isn’t open!
