🇺🇸 On a strictly one-time basis, World Athletics has approved an expanded seven-woman U.S. team for the women's half marathon at the 2026 World Athletics Road Running Championships in Copenhagen (Sept. 19-20), up from the standard four. This comes after three American women (Jess McClain, Emma Grace Hurley and Ednah Kurgat) were robbed of a likely podium finish at the USATF Half Marathon Championships in Atlanta after a police injury caused the lead vehicle to direct the front pack off course The seven spots team will be: 3 off-course athletes: Jess McClain, Emma Grace Hurley, Ednah Kurgat 3 official top finishers: Molly Born, Carrie Ellwood, Annie Rodenfels 1 world ranking selection (as of May 5) 🗣️ CEO Max Siegel: “From the moment this happened, our focus was on doing right by the athletes. Jessica, Emma Grace, and Ednah had clearly separated themselves in the race and we are sorry they did not get to celebrate their accomplishment by breaking the tape. On behalf of everyone at USA Track & Field, I want to thank World Athletics. Their council and leadership are committed to a fair and athlete-centered solution that preserves the integrity of competition while recognizing the reality of what occurred in Atlanta.” How will it work in Copenhagen? USATF will designate four scoring athletes and three non-scoring athletes. The non-scoring trio are full Team USATF members and will earn World Athletics ranking points, but cannot contribute to team scoring, win medals, or receive official prize money and will wear a distinct kit. USATF will cover all additional expenses and will pay out any prize money non-scoring athletes earn on their own. 🔜 The full U.S. team will be named following the USATF 1 Mile Championships (April 22) and USATF 5K Championships (May 2).

@JassRonaldChisi @captaincaleb18 @JonHeyman Lmao your contract eval is crazy low. Soto got 17 mil in year 2 of arbitration! Soto is better than PCA was last year, but not a TON better. If PCA even remotely approaches his first half form for a whole season he'll be 7+WAR and getting MVP votes and this will be a bargain.

@captaincaleb18 @JonHeyman He's making about $800k this year & would have probably made up to $5 million next year, up to $9 million the year after, up to $12 million the year after & then maybe up to $16 million the year after. @tristan_sudbury @jacksettleman Except that erases the most likely scenario, which is Florida telling players to foul the bad shooters if at all possible and not fouling otherwise. Also, how are you calculating win % if it goes to overtime?

@MarkovWalker @jacksettleman They do. I used 75.6% team average. This is with 65 and 85. That help? And don’t forget. Iowa wants to send their best shooter to the line. Where is Florida wants to send their worst. So average is probably the best stat to use.

I NEED more attention on this. Last year Golden said he’d foul up 2 in a similar situation. If they had done it, the internet would’ve thought he was insane. Yet, tonight is exactly why you do it. Can only tie, you get the last shot and you’re 11 point pregame faves which means you’re favored in overtime.
Jack Settleman@jacksettleman

I need someone to ask Golden if he called for a foul or not. Golden said last year in this situation that he’d consider intentionally fouling

@tristan_sudbury @jacksettleman These numbers are completely disingenuous because they don't seem to account for WHO is fouled. It's hard to tell exactly who was on the floor, but at least Stirtz and Sage were on with their 15% difference in FT%. Odds of making both differ by 23.5 percentage points!

Six days ago, in front of 7,971 people inside a stadium north of the Arctic Circle, Bodo Glimt dismantled Sporting CP 3-0 and sent one of Portuguese football's proudest clubs home with their heads down. It was the same ground that had already swallowed Manchester City and Inter Milan whole earlier in this season's Europa League. Sporting were just the latest name on a list that was starting to look embarrassing for European football's establishment. Tonight, Sporting CP wrote their own chapter. Goals from Gonçalo Inácio, Pedro Gonçalves and a Luis Suárez penalty levelled the tie at 3-3 on aggregate after ninety minutes, sending it to extra time. Maximiliano Araújo made it 4-0 on the night in the 92nd minute and Rafael Nel finished the job in the 120th, sealing a 5-0 win on the night and a 5-3 victory on aggregate. Sporting CP are through. Now here is the context that makes tonight feel genuinely historic. Overturning a three-goal deficit in European football is not something that happens often. It is not something that happens regularly. In the entire history of the Champions League, it has been done only five times, and each occasion is remembered decades later. Deportivo La Coruña did it first in 2003/04, coming back from a 4-1 first leg loss against AC Milan to win 4-0 at home and eliminate the defending champions. Barcelona did it against PSG in 2017, overturning a 4-0 deficit with a 6-1 win at the Camp Nou in what remains arguably the greatest single comeback in the competition's history. Roma did it against Barcelona in 2018, winning 3-0 at the Stadio Olimpico to progress on away goals after losing 4-1 in the first leg. Liverpool did it against Barcelona in 2019, winning 4-0 at Anfield after losing 3-0 at the Camp Nou, with Divock Origi and Georginio Wijnaldum scoring twice each. And Atalanta did it against Borussia Dortmund in the 2025/26 knockout phase playoffs, completing the most recent comeback before tonight. Sporting CP just joined that list. Not against PSG. Not against Barcelona. Against Bodo Glimt, a club from a Norwegian city of 50,000 people that had beaten Manchester City, Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid in the same campaign. The fairy tale was real. The achievement was genuine. And Sporting ended it anyway. Three goals down. Five goals scored. The Alvalade did not just host a football match tonight. It hosted a reminder that in this competition, no deficit is safe and no story is finished until the final whistle sounds. My name is Ajoje. It's not complicated and it's got nothing to do with style of football, nobody wants to see big teams who haven't won anything in a while break their duck. It's standard fan stuff. Almost no champions or challengers are ever actually loved by the 'neutral' because there is no such thing as a 'neutral.' People don't mind City winning the league because it's very easy to compartmentalise and they don't have a big fanbase so people just don't encounter many City fans online and in day to day life. All this stuff about 'style' is utter nonsense.

I personally don’t want to see Cody Gakpo at left wing anymore. Everytime Rio Ngumoha gets the ball, he’s either beating his man, bringing Liverpool closer to the box, or allowing Liverpool to sustain pressure in the final third. LW belongs to Rio.

@MarkovWalker @kmedved Yes, but they would be trying to win up until that point. Losing game after game after game would guarantee you not to get the #1 pick. That would get you the bottom of the lottery. So there might be some tanking, but it wouldn’t happen until very late in the season.

Anti-tanking idea I’ve been kicking around for a while, and came up at Sloan this year: teams aren’t allowed to use their own draft picks. That’s it. If you still own your pick when the season starts, it moves to the end of the first round. Nothing else needed. Bad teams still have a valuable asset. They just have to trade it before the season begins. So hopeless teams (say Kings and Pacers) pair off and swap picks before the season. Both get value back. Neither has any reason to tank in-season. Or your can just trade your pick for players, future assets, etc. Anything you want. You just can’t use your own pick. Eliminates the incentive to lose without eliminating the mechanism that helps bad teams improve. Clean, elegant, easy to explain. Note it doesn’t prevent Hinkie-style tanking. Teams can still build terrible rosters on purpose. But it does prevent the Utah Jazz from this year, where you bench your starters in the 4th Q to chase ping pong balls. The latter is more pernicious and more detrimental imo, but I appreciate there is some disagreement on this.

@Pypeline_ @kmedved It's unworkable because the #1 pick is way more valuable than a first round ass kicking, so teams would definitely try to tank OUT of the playoffs to get it, which is the worst look possible.

@kmedved What if the #1 pick went to the non-playoff team with the best record? The worst team got the worst lottery pick. At worst, teams wouldn’t tank until the very last week. And then it would only be a handful of teams.

What we took from today : • The frustrating part is none of it is surprising - we all saw it coming. • Watching us right now is painful. • Liverpool end up handing Tudor his first point… typical. • Spurs had half their squad missing and we still couldn’t make it count. At this stage something has to give. Slot has to leave. We can still make a change and secure top 5.

@billbrasier @CourtneyRCronin Yeah but the argument, seemingly backed up by comments by Matt Ryan, is his position is more or less a sinecure with perhaps some broad agenda setting. Personnel decisions will be Cunningham, which is what everyone means when they say "top exec".

The Bears were loud in the right places (public media settings with maximum visibility at the combine) regarding how they felt wronged by the NFL’s decision to not award comp picks for Ian Cunningham’s departure. It goes against the spirit of what the Rooney Rule is supposed to be about (promoting minority advancement in coaching and front office positions). The NFL was adamant in January that it wasn’t something that could be appealed but the Bears tried anyways. Can’t fault them for their attempt, but fall out from this should lead to a real conversation about the rule in the first place and how poorly this reflects back on the league.

Not a fan of this signing for the Bears. After an underwhelming career he finally had a plus season in a walk year behind Myles Garrett, next to DROY Schwesinger and under Jim Schwartz. Feels like we just signed a player at the tippy top of whatever market he'll ever have.
