(Reuters) - Cuba's national electric grid collapsed on Saturday, the ‌country's grid operator said, leaving around 10 million people without power amid a U.S.-imposed oil blockade that has crippled the island's already obsolete generation system.

It’s October 1984 and the polls have them with a 4-6 point lead over Reagan in every swing state. It’s going to be very close on election night. The democrats are taking the white house back? I forgot how this played out.

@MaskedDefender @ElectaWing @charlesmurray Lincoln himself refused to emancipate his own slaves. He acquired a few thru marriage. Instead of freeing them, he sold them for a profit. At the time this did cause a rift within his own family, some of his cousins were dismayed by his behavior. (1850).

For Civil War people: If you haven't read Henry Kyd Douglas's "I Rode with Stonewall," do so. He was with Jackson from Jackson's initial posting at Harpers Ferry through the Valley Campaign, Antietam, and Chancellorsville, almost all of that time on Jackson's personal staff. Wounded and captured at Gettysburg, he was exchanged and ended the war leading the last unit to stack its arms at Appomattox. It's anecdotal, with lots of personal accounts both of Jackson and day-to-day life in the Confederate army. Douglas himself was a sort of a David Niven type--charmingly self-deprecating, good humored, often funny, and a gifted story-teller. In my experience, it's unique among Civil War memoirs.

@MaskedDefender @ElectaWing @charlesmurray They also did it earlier. Also at the exact times that the South considered freeing slaves, and enlisting them in the army & letting them remain in the South, Lincoln was trying to deport all the slaves & ex slaves & free blacks out of the US, up to the day he got shot.

@Mayanrocket @ElectaWing @charlesmurray Yeah ... um ... The United States of America was the thing and a bunch of black people torturing evil crackers weren't going to make off with half of it. As they found out the hard way. Show me a citation on this offer.

@MaskedDefender @ElectaWing @charlesmurray Historian Gary Gallagher (not a fan of the CSA) said a Union victory before 1863 would have kept slavery. The CSA also offered more than once to end slavery in exchange for independence. The Union said no-because slavery was not the thing.

@MaskedDefender @charlesmurray Yeah, I didn't think you had the detached objectivity to follow my argument. But I tried. Now soak your ovaries, they're clearly inflamed.

White House chief of staff Susie Wiles does not get enough credit. Her enabling of Trump's worst impulses has not only led to the destruction of democracy and the Nazification of America, but also to the alienation of America's longtime allies, who consider Trump to be INSANE.

@Eric_Erins In NY you just about froze the rents and they eventually became 10% of market. Sound like something anyone would want to build and manage?

We used to have these. They were called Apartment Hotels. They’d consist of a single room with a bathroom, housecleaning, a cafeteria and lounges. Imagine being able to rent month to month and not need to furnish an apartment. It was ideal. Nuts we got rid of these.

Lots of people's social & romantic lives could be vastly improved if it was normal for young adults to live in college dorm-style accommodation in city centres until they were ready to set up home properly. Why doesn't this exist? I think there would be a market for it!

@HisMightyNibbs @charlesmurray High standards? Wow. Whipping defenseless people to work until death in hot summers. Chaining them ankle to ankle. Raping little black girls. Maybe you need to watch Roots fool. This was abhorent by 19th Century Western civilization standards.

So what? You hold Southerners to a high standards. You hold them to a modern liberal standard that would have made no sense to them. It makes no sense anyway. Do you wear Nikes? Do you support mass immigration? Then somebody, someday is going to see you as you see those old Confederates.

@AllanWilleford @charlesmurray Pure 100% grade A ... BS. The final draft of Constitution itself was the South's insistence on protecting slavery. It was always slavery. The South's shame and you and Southerners who aren't profoundly ashamed of that history are scum.

@MaskedDefender @charlesmurray The South was being robbed by national policy. The phony morality of the conquering Northern mystery money was despicable. Slavery is a puerile argument. Simple minds cling to simple arguments, true or not.
