Slump in electric car sales worsening. 14% overall fall 2024 v 2023 (vs 8% rise in overall car sales) in Ireland. 41% fall in March v March last year. This despite massive price cuts. No way to spoof or bluff this — poor public charging network, misleading range advice etc.

@GardaTraffic @TFIupdates That's a shocking indictment of the degree of noncompliance among taxi drivers. If you extrapolate that figure across all 25000 taxis nationally it equates to 4000 taxis non compliant which is a staggering possibility

Our Roads Policing Unit in South Dublin were out with @TFIupdates over the weekend to check that taxi’s operating in the area are properly regulated. Of the 31 taxi’s checked at this one checkpoint, five received fines for noncompliance. #SaferRoads

@declanganley @DaddyDaragh And who brought industrial levels of child rape and systemic abuse to practically every diocese across the country ? Indeed sadly it was even exported. This is a secular society and that secularism grows by the day.

I find it fascinating that Ireland’s political leadership essentially ignored the most important Christian celebration of the year; Easter, the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. The historic DNA that makes Ireland distinct, is the flame of its Christianity. To ignore it is to be in denial of our roots and foundation. It’s also very odd, Easter is especially beautiful. Simon Harris did tweet about Easter being the triumph of light over darkness, but that sounds more like a solstice. Anyway, each to their own I suppose but they remind me of teenagers who imagine they are too cool to have parents.

@OldIrishFief @mhantain He's highlighting a very legitimate widespread problem that is going unpunished, what's pathetic is you're criticising a stranger for wanting laws to be enforced. If you can't contribute productivity keep your opinion to yourself.

@ConorHogarty Ireland indeed has a decades long history of peacekeeping but Ireland also permits American military to use Shannon Airport, the same nation selling 3 billion dollars worth of weapons to Israel annually, weapons being used to bomb Palestine. Ireland can't have it both ways.

The Irish Times view on Ireland’s peacekeeping work: a record to be proud. " I think that the loyalty of the Defence Forces is beyond question, but I would just like to see the reciprocity in terms of that loyalty." Vice Admiral Mark Mellett in 2018. irishtimes.com/opinion/editor…

@davidmcw Nimbyism is a symptom of not having a countrywide gov housing strategy. If the gov took on the role of chief House builder as it did in decades past, if it had a clear strategy, people might buy into it. But when there's no coherent plan people will fear change in their locale.

Morning. A few thoughts on endemic Irish Nimbyism which puts a cap on the building of homes & before you know it, the price of all homes increases & the cost is paid by society as a whole. It only takes a few objectors to exact a huge cost on the many. irishtimes.com/opinion/2024/0…

@LauraOK99012729 @oliver_moran @CorkGreens @greenparty_ie @GNBCORK If your only exposure to a public representative is to their poster on a street lamp in the week before an election then that particular rep has completely failed in getting their message to the electorate. Posters are an archaic and wasteful method of advertising.

@Mathieunorry @oliver_moran @CorkGreens @greenparty_ie @GNBCORK Disagree with you as there are many locals in Glanmire who do not use social media and would miss the opportunity to add their input to this important meeting without these posters. Good luck with the meeting Oliver, a great idea. Looking forward to positive results for Glanmire.

@oliver_moran @CorkGreens @greenparty_ie @GNBCORK When in Italy existing billboards are used to show all constituency candidates simultaneously on each billboard. Allowing individual candidates free reign to post leads to a visually offensive landscape, its a safety issue in high winds and contributes to litter. This must change

@Mathieunorry @CorkGreens @greenparty_ie @GNBCORK After #LE19, I proposed #CorkCC would identify designated locations for posters like there are in other countries (e.g. France). Unfortunately, that motion fell by one vote. There's good research on the importance of posters for voters. Social media doesn't have the same reach.

We did tremendous work on tobacco with the introduction of the smoking ban on this day in 2004. With vaping, another frontier has opened up and we need to tackle that. I'm delighted that we've banned the sale of vapes to under-18s, but we need to go further.

@MichealMartinTD Just imagine how many irish people would still be alive if tobacco products had been banned outright in 2004. Now is the time to do it, and let's ban vapes too, the evidence of lung damage caused by vapes already exists.

On this day in 2004, twenty years ago, as Health Minister I introduced a ban on smoking in indoor public places, including pubs, restaurants and other workplaces. Ireland was the first country in the world to introduce such a ban, and some 74 countries have followed our example.

@CyclingInKK I disagree that a scheme that perpetuates the use of plastic can be deemed a success. We need to abandon plastic, not just for the environment, but evidence exists of the dangers of microplastics to health, something rarely mentioned here. We have an alternative, glass.

Just 12 days ago Anton Lienert-Brown was prone face down on the field. 5 mins later he left on a medicab & failed a HIA he shouldn’t have taken. In 12 hours, despite a luxury of playing depth, he plays again. What’s it going to take for teams to err on the side of caution?
